I thought this for a second, but given the tremendous success Florida has had in basketball, they really don't get great fan support.

First of all, have you seen many FL fans in this site?
Second of all, have you ever attended a game at the O'Dome?
You sir, are an idiot.

I just posted a new thread about similiar thoughts and UF had 8,000 for Alabama State...we should have more butts in the seats. Surely more students would like to attend?

BTW basketball has always been first for me.
I do agree the season begins too early, while football is going on. To me, it should start early december, when there is no regular season football left, and maybe push it to April.

Well, the problem with basketball attendance is that the O'Dome upper seats SUCK, and are pricey for the viewing they provide. You get a much better view from home. And the closest metro area to Gainesville is a and hour (Jax), with Tampa, and Orlando at least 2 hr drive. To make the drive on a weekday or a Sunday SUCKS.

I attended every basketball game when I was a student. Now, I can only attend one game a year if I'm lucky, or NCAA tourney.

Because it's a boring Canadian sport that only buys a little time between football and baseball season.

Unlike certain teams, our football season isn't over yet.

Biggest non yearly rivalry in college sports tonight.... UK vs Duke

Indiana is rivalry #1 and Cal ended it
Kansas is gone too
UNC is "sleeping"
MSU is on a break

Dook is a team I care so little about about I would not call them a rival unless you think a bunch of flopping ner do wells led by a whining rat faced media whore should warrant more attention. I would take Bobby Knight, Wimp Sanderson, Dale Brown, and even 15 second Rick over Dook as a better game any day. If it were not for ESPN pimpin their Dook bitch we would have never seen this team on TV as much as we do. Look at most of the wins Duke racked up against such weak opposition over their history.

I only posted it that way because it's tonight.

Indiana was our best rivalry (but it was every year). Can't believe him and Crean couldn't get that worked out.

In baseball, probably. Kentucky is about as terrible as we are in terms of baseball support.

When you make the Top 40 in national attendance get back to us as UK is already there

With Kentucky, as this year even Vanderbilt is better than you.

I have a sneaking suspicion it was not Cal and Crean. IU is BTN and UK is ESPN. With the game back as home and home instead of neutral it means the B1G / BTN would have the media rights every other year when played in Bloomington. Texas dropped a B1G game last year or the year before and I suspect it was because the LHN wanted media rights for both games.

You could be right. It seemed like all of the talk surrounded the home/home vs football stadium venue.
If I remember right, UK agreed to play at Lucas Oil/Bloomington/Lucas Oil/Bloomington.
If that didn't make IU happy, then I don't know what would.
Cal wanted to play in arena's where the Final Four is held and I can't argue with him on that.

Silly sport with sillier tournament. Seriously, I watch occassionally but why get excited when wins and losses barely matter. You can be national champs with 11 losses and people think that's better than football's MNC, really? March Madness should be renamed, to me it is the definition of absurdity. Just can't get into it.

This.

The college basketball season is a total and complete waste of time. There is no meaning to it. When Big East 9th place UConn is your National Champion two years ago, it clearly shows how meaningless the regular season is.

Wake me up when it's March and college basketball games start to matter and people actually start watching it.

I can appreciate that but there is no reason for the real fans to have a major game away from home on a weekday. Even in Freedom / Hoosier Dome the UK vs IU game was always on a weekend to max out capacity. Playing Catlanta on a late night weekday game means they will not sell as well as folks will stay home and watch it on TV. Some folks have to work and were not going to the game because of this.

I agree with you here. I hate a 9:30pm Tuesday night game. I get up at 5am, so it's tough enough on me on Wednesdays.

This is one of the things that Cal and the fan base don't agree on. His one and only goal is the Final Four/NC. The fans want quality home games against traditional rivals (North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas), and Cal would rather play in Texas Stadium. He also doesn't care about SEC titles, only NC.

Basketball

Just the way it is here. Like how most schools outside of the sec don't care much about baseball.

Considering what the K Fund now costs I am gonna side with the fans on this one. Playing Maryland and Duke away means tickets are not an option for most season ticket holders. Unless you are in the Top 50 - 100 donors you are not getting good away seats.

I beg to differ!
In the days when Dale Brown was running the freak defense the Tigers were pretty passionate about basketball.

I don't mind it really - you can actually have legitimate pseudo grown-up discussions on here during basketball season. It may seem odd to those that haven't experienced it yet, but it can happen.

The only thing that's slightly annoying are the people who go out of their way to talk about how much they hate basketball. I realized at one point that I was kind of doing that with college baseball, so now I just stay out of those threads for the most part (every once in a while I'll point out that the idea that there's a Big 3 in college sports is absurd, but that's about it).

In my 4 years as a student at UGA, I missed less than 10 home basketball games and most of those were due to holidays when I went home. And this was in the Felton era!

I love going to basketball games, but the fact is a lot of students won't care unless we're good. Every time it was the same routine; I'd ask my roommates and neighbors if anyone wanted to go, they'd say nah, and I'd go alone. I know it's a chicken and the egg argument, but kids that have no real interest or desire in basketball simply aren't going to go to games unless the product is good and entertaining. We're neither right now.

Most state fans like basketball, but you won't hear much from us this year.
