It matters when the accomplishments of the 2 are pretty close. You're citing comparisons where 1 coach accomplished enough more than the other coach that h2h didn't matter. That's not really the case in Bear-Neyland.
By this logic, Mack Brown is a better coach than Les Miles (I don't know anyone who would agree with that statement, btw). Brown owned Miles (when he was at the peak of his career and Miles was a brand new head coach).

How is it possible that an opinion be invalid?
I'm not the one saying that it's impossible to put Bear #1, I just said that i didn't agree. If anyone's argument is invalid here it's the people who are saying their opinion is the only legitimate one.

Your sole argument is head-to-head before Bryant was even in his prime.
Wrong again. if you look at the overall dominance I think Neyland edges Bear out. Go look at how few points some of those Neyland teams gave up. 6 undefeated UT teams vs 2 for bear at UA.
Neyland wrote the playbook for coaching that Bear then followed. Neyland was also a great innovator. While bear was an amazing coach, he is not credited with really advancing the game in any meaningful way.
Again we're splitting hairs, and I don't think it's a crime to put bear #1, but in my opinion Neyland was the best coach in SEC history.

Bryant had four undefeated seasons. Three at Alabama and one at Texas A&M.

6-3 then. A&M was not SEC at that time and this is about SEC coaches.
Even if you did count it it's 6-4 which is the same as NCs except the other way so you're tied.

Bryant/Spurrs/Saban top 3. Everyone else had peaks of winning, but no domination.

Lol i think a national title is worth a lot more than an undefeated season, especially considering how many ties there were back then

I get your point Drac and as I said in my earlier post Neyland is easily one of the greatest coaches in SEC/college football history, I just think it's silly to put so much weight on a veteran coach in Robert Neyland having success over Bryant while he was still practically an apprentice at Kentucky.

Another argument for Neyland is he had arguably the most dominant run in college football, albeit, a short run. He went 17 straight games where Tennssee shut out the opponent. I gave Bear the slight edge, but an argument can be made for both.

Yeah because all 6 of those NCs are totally without any controversy whatsoever

Only one of Neyland's "undefeated seasons" didn't include a tie. Bryant had three undefeated and untied seasons at Alabama.

Neither were Neyland's.

I mean a lot of those Kentucky teams were damn strong. And we're not talking about 2 or 3 games here. They played 7 times and Bear never won any of them.

A question for Auburn fans or whoever feels like they know: Who was better, Dye or Jordan? I say Jordan.
Posted on 12/29/12 at 6:20 pm to WDE85
As far as I can tell you have Shug Jordan on here because he coached for 25 years at Auburn. In 25 years he won one SEC title and one national title both which were in 1957. Also that year Auburn was banned from a bowl game by the NCAA.
He might of been a saint but one of the top 10 coaches in SEC history he was not. And before anybody says anything the name of the game is winning and winning one title in 25 years doesn't equate to being a top SEC coach.

The title was not his only accomplishment. 22 of 25 seasons he went to a bowl and won 4 coach of the year awards, FWIW.
ETA: My bad, not a bowl, but had a winning record 22 of 25 seasons.

ETA: He actually did not win any SEC titles, only 3 Southern titles.

On a side note, General Neyland was brought to Tennessee specifically to beat Vanderbilt. It's the 1920s all over again eh Vols?
