Just curious, what do you guys think Mississippi State football fans should expect and want from their football program? I am a realist an know how difficult it is playing and recruiting against LSU and Alabama. Just curious what yalls expectations would be for wins and recruiting year to year for Dan Mullen or whoever is our Head Football Coach.
Bowl game 7 out of 10 years.

You CAN win there
You mean like Mullen is doing now? Currently he has a winning record at State. Just think about that for a little bit.

What has he done to inspire any confidence in your program long-term?
Let's see... Besides the winning record part, He'll probably match Emory Bellard's mark of 20 wins in first 3 years. But even Bellard finished with a 5 win year. Has a better record than Sherill at this point. Again who had some turd seasons.
Sure there might be a better option out there but if you want to show stability in our program, State cannot be firing a winning coach.

Yeah, I guess he arrived a MSU late in his career.
The most amazing stat in college football: MSU has zero Sugar bowls in 70+ years of SEC play.
:ouch:

Don't forget that snow covered Poulan-Weedeater Bowl.
That was actually cool.

Yeah, kind of was even though at one point I couldn't see down the field. Sitting in the corner of the endzone it was a white-out past the 50 for me a one point.

Honestly, I think it's the geography of the school location and your facilities. You are no where near any kind of metro area and you don't have enough rich boosters that could bolster your facilities to give top OOS recruits the "toys" they desire to want to attend for 4 years.
Prime examples are: Oregon and Ok State
without Phil Knight & Boone Pickens the average fan could not tell you what city either of those schools are located in. Right now you are in the same shoes as those guys before their boosters chipped in.
I love your fan base BTW. You are humble yet proud. Stay that way and let the football thing play itself out. It's not Mullens, it's not your administration... it is what it is. Good luck, dawg!

Exactly my point in my post a couple pages back, the step to us getting better is just by being the top university in the state athletics wise and having consistent winning seasons.
With stability comes happy boosters and hopefully more donations which would allow us to take the next step. Right now we have a good coach and a great administration.

We need more RICH boosters

Just leave Mullen alone and he will get the job done. Problem is MSU doesn't pay for players like Ole Miss and a lot of other schools in the SEC. Maybe they should. Auburn has proven that you won't get punished if you do.

This is my take.Mullen is a good coach. He is cocky which rubs some recruits the wrong way and most fanbases the wrong way.We need a dynamite recruiting coordinator and just leave the coachiing to Mullen.A few on here think Mullen disappointed this yr.Our OL struggles is the difference in us going 6-6 this yr instead of 8-4.Mullen has made some questionable calls this yr but on the whole he is a good coach.Let's not forget he is only in yr 3 and he will improve as well. Our facilities are getting a major upgrade in the next 5yrs.Which should help with recruiting. We have to find a way to get all the top mississippi players to come to State. We split with Ole Miss then LSU comes and gets 1,Bama,1 etc etc.We can't expect to get great OOS recruits until we lock up our State first. We have the talent in State to make us very competive but we have to sign at least 80% of the top players for 3 or 4 yrs before we will have the depth necessary to compete with the upper echelon teams. As far as my expectations 7-5 every yr and 10 win seasons 1 in 5 yrs.BTW I realize my points are kinda all over the place but hopefully you get the jist of what i'm saying.ADHD and typing, not a good combo

Last time we did we won consistently. Other SEC schools complained and we wound up on probation.

i agree with that.
Let's wait a little bit before anyone anoints shaw that high.
He had a great game vs Kentucky (Lexington High school would rape them) but is 3-0* as a starter.

6-8+ wins and a bowl game. MSU has a decent coach and a competitive team. Y'all gave the Hogs everything we could handle last year.
So far, I've picked MSU to win every SEC game besides LSU this year. Patience can be a bitch but that's what's needed.

14-0 and national championship every year. No game closer than 35 points. Ever. Allow a first down maybe once or twice every three or four games.

Alabama/LSU aren't invincible, and the SEC likely won't remain on the mountaintop forever.
These last few years have just been a bad time to not be Alabama/LSU/Arkansas in the SEC west right now. If you were to take Mullen's team last year or even this year's team and were to put them up against SEC schools from like 2001-2007, I think our record would look far better.
Of course, throwing out a brand new cadillac or two to new recruits would certainly help matters.

I would think that MSU would have to ultimately dominate OM inside Mississippi media and politics to gain a flagship status perception. It's a long term project, but it's certainly possible with the historical baggage the 'Rebels' bring to the table.
I know it seems unthinkable today, but I've witnessed the transformation of NOLA from a Tulane/Ole Miss town into an LSU town in my lifetime. As a kid, I remember the local sports report would talk about Tulane and maybe Ole Miss, and then at the end there would be a segment "from our sister station in Baton Rouge" as though LSU was an afterthought.
