If I was a State fan I would expect:

7-5/8-4 records annually
Decent bowl games annually
Top 20 in recruiting annually
top 25 finish annually with occassional dip into top 15

I would WANT:
9-3/10-2
January bowls annually
Do a better job of locking up Mississippi in recruiting and finish in top 15 annually in recruiting
Top 15 finishes annually with occassional dip into top 10

I think the "expectation" is more realistic than the "want", but the "want" is possible under right leadership (which isn't there...Mullen over-rated) and circumstances.

I think for MSU or Ole Miss the goal should be a bowl game every year with the possibility of lining up your talent for a run at the West once every five years or so. Ole Miss had this going with Cut but fired him after one losing season.

Not flaming at all. Just what i really think. Same way I feel about us.

You have always been one of the better posters from OM, but you just achieved a whole different level of good with that statement

MULLEN is the exact coach MSU needs... someone that not only believes, but sells the fans on it too.

Mullen sold them on something he can't deliver. They thought they'd be making real noise this year, but this year they didn't get the jump on anyone. Next year shouldn't be much different and let's see how the fans take it.

The best thing that happened to SC was our psychological overall from Holtz & Spurrier. The prior coach Brad Scott was a lot like Mullen, except he was a much better recruiter. He was the OC at FSU the year they won the NC w/ Charlie Ward and the hurry up offense. In his first year, he beat LSU in BR and @Clemson and beat WVa in the bowl, and we thought we were the s#$t. That was the last bowl he took us to. In his 5th year, we went 1-10.

Lou came in the next year and told us he wanted to win a national championship like everyone, but we had to be realistic. Let's first try to have a winning season. We went 0-11 in his first year, but sold the stadium out for every game. The next 2 years we won back-to-back Outback Bowls, with some quality wins against ranked opponents each year. Lou had a winning season his last season, but you could tell he'd lost the fire. Spurrier told us on his first day that he wanted the challenge and didn't see why SC had never won regularly. Pretty much told us we were a turd that he wanted to try to mold into a diamond, but made no promises. And the majority of the fans were satisfied. He beat UF and UT his first year, but we remained calm. We've made some strides and moved ourselves from the cellar into a solid 2nd tier SEC program, recognizing that there is more work to do. You've got to learn how to walk before you can run.

I think ALL state fans should DEMAND that Mullins (Most OVER RATED coach in the SEC!) beat someone other than Ole Pi$$. Hanging your hat on beating the Black bears every year isn't saying much. Ole Pi$$ is like 0-10 in the last 10 SEC games they have played. Beating the worst team in the SEC year after year isn't saying much.

Start with winning a few SEC games, hell even the crappy east teams :)

Miss State, Ole Piss, and Southern and all the black colleges in Miss are the down fall of any of those teams getting the best recruits. Then add the grades. How many players don't make their grades and go the JC route.........Then you got LSU on one side and Bama and Au on the other and Tenn on top......Those 3 teams don't have a chance in recruiting.........soooooooo....

Mullens has brought back belief. The next step is learning how to close a game and win. Mullens will be at State as long as he want to be. State just has to come up with more money to pay top arse't so coaches like Manny D won't leave.

State will get better the way Mullens is building his program. Red-shiting is a biggie with State. Depth is a biggie with State.
Fan support is a biggie. The stadium expansion will help. Getting players drafted will help. Beating the school up north every year helps.........

When the Miss. players want to stay in State, that will help......

Mullen is the right coach at State right now.
State just needs to pay the good arse't coaches more to stay......

I was surprised that MSU hired Mullen. They didn't need system coach as much as they needed a recruiter.

This is a great point. It's been said before but State has to find a way to get good OOS kids to play for them.

At one point, a third of LSUs players were Texas kids. This might be a good time for MSU to raid Florida since the major college programs there are having disappointing years (when was the last time that happened)?

This doesn't affect recruiting that much. Kids want early playing time and we have plenty of that.

FSU has been down for 7-8 years and they are still getting great classes. Our class is going to be very good as well.

Not sure about that mess that is Miami. I hope they never recover.

Does not compute. One can't get great recruiting classes year after year and, yet, continue to be down for 7-8 years. Either the classes were over-rated, the coaching poor, or both.

How does Dan Mullen or any future Head Coach fix this? How can we compete in recruiting against Bama, LSU, and Auburn?

You can't survive on the talent you are able to pull from Mississippi. You must do a better job of recruiting throughout the southeast. But it is just very hard to overcome the image of a Mississippi that is not exactly Las Vegas in the excitement category. You gotta have a 80,000+ seat stadium and fill it on a regular basis. Players want to be seen.

A .500 record overall and a bowl appearance should please the Moo State fanbase.

Seriously.

When MSU is good in the league, they seem to do it with good defense. Mississippi puts out a lot of large men that can anchor the defensive line. Stuffing the run is a good place to start. An MSU fan should expect their defense to be one of the top units in the SEC every year. If you play really good D, 6 wins is almost a given with any sort of offense at all. The years you get good offense, enjoy the hell out of a 9 or 10 win season. That should get you a top 10-15 place finish nationally.

I would suggest that you don't play Top 20 teams OOC. You get enough of that in conference.

Trust me, we aren't. UAB, Memphis, Troy, Tulane, South Alabama, Southern Miss over the next 5 years.

It's a tough question for sure. I guess it is a question of resources. Can you build a larger stadium and then fill it? What condition are the rest of your facilities in? What would it take to stop bleeding so much of the states available talent to other schools?

Also, you have to compete with Ole Miss for many of the same players/resources. I don't know. I have often told my nephew (Miss State grad) that you need to take the 'if you build it, they will come' approach. But is that feasible?

otherwise, 7-9 wins with a rare 10 win season unless the culture changes. Losing and sucking should always be unacceptable anywhere that isn't Nashville.

If I was a state fan, I would classify 8-4 as a very good year, and be happy with 7-5(depending on who you play from the east/their strength) with a bowl game win.

This. As a UK fan, I'd say fans of both teams have (or should have) similar expectations.
