what's odd is that he did a lot more of that while at UT. He had a shift in philosophy at some point

Like I said, he has gotten soft in his old age.

Honestly, we may see a shift back to his old ways with aTm. It could be he just relied on the insane amount of talent he had in the backfield while at LSU.

I think Auburn ends up in the top 6. We'll have a pass rush again with Tray Mathews shoring up the back end. I fully expect LB play to be a lot better also.

Top 6??? So ahead of at least a few of

Alabama
Ole Miss
LSU
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Arkansas
Missouri

I just don't see it. Better? Yes.

Don't get me wrong, I love Chief, he put together some of the best defenses in Tennessee history, during the Randy Sanders era, his defense was only reason we were winning.

But, and I'm sure LSU fans will agree, A&M is not getting the Chief that created defenses that made opponents shite their pants, the are getting old Chief, soft Chief, swan song Chief.

They are in for a rude awakening when they meet 3rd and Chavis coming over the middle.

The SEC is definitely going back to its roots of excellent defenses and strong running games, average qb play

Well Chavis relies on very great DB play, and aTm is lacking in that department. They do not have the personnel to go man on everyone. IMO.

You know whats weird? I agree with what you are saying but I really want to see us try.

Partially because I feel that is how we find out early if we do have any longer-term answers back there. Partially because I think getting burned a few too many times might really show what kind of coach Chavis is. Can he adjust to worse talent?

The honest truth is that everything was SO bad the last few years there isn't a bad move. I would rather experiment and take this lumps this season, especially if Chavis's first ideas don't work or we need to replace a position coach or two.

I agree with everything everyone is saying about Chavis.

I still think that Chavis everyone is describing will make A&M 50-75 yards better a game solely because they will be fundamentally decent. A&M's defense the last 2 years is the worst major college defense fundamentally I have ever seen. I've never seen so many guys (a) out of position (b) avoid blocks at the LOS (c) miss tackles and (d) just give up. Chief will make a lot of that better. They won't be great, but they won't be a fiery car crash of awfulness anymore.

shhhhh

I still stand by the the best thing Chavis is going to provide with a competent defense, but even better help Sumlin adjust his scheme on offense. Chavis has the blueprint for shutting down A&M, but he also probably knows wrinkles they can add to make the system top tier

If we ever get to a point as a fanbase that we are pissed about Chavis blowing 3rd downs or late game leads that means we are SO much better as a defense overall that I will take it. The assumption in all these Chavis warnings is that he doesn't blow it on first or third down, or the first three quarters of play. That is so much better than what we had.

shite maybe we can keep a full stadium until the 4th quarter with Chavis.

I'm optimistic, so long as CB can stay healthy. AU will have the best D-line it has had in years along with talent and experience at LB. Add Tray in at safety + Muschamp, I think AU will be in the mix.

ETA: I don't think Muschamp has ever had a D finish outside of the top-5 in the SEC?

Tennessee fans used to complain about the Mustang Package as much or more than LSU fans do.

They can tick off a list of late drive losses that were because Chavis went into monster prevents and gave up chunks of 20-30 yards in 10 seconds.

2001 UT vs Georgia...the Mustang at its finest.

Agree 100% - and I think that is an attainable goal. The bright side is things were so miserable before that I think there is a large gap of possibility to get better just by having a guy like Chavis around to sure up things that should never be issues in SEC Football.

Was only possible with the stupid short squib kick, much like last years Alabama drive vs LSU to tie the game.
