They won't but they have some good young talent across the line, definitely improve in depth, and will finally have some decent S and CBs. I'd be very surprised if they were last.

He did back in the day...

Quite frankly, I always thought Chief was pretty much a caretaker at LSU. He wasn't bad, but I never thought he was some sort of gamechanger. He was running vanilla sets with 10 NFL players behind it. It worked a lot because the personnel was incredible and they tackled well in space and made football plays in the secondary.

Prepare thy anus. aTm fans will be coming.

Seriously, I would call him a caretaker, per se, but he was doing exactly what you said. He took NFL talent and put them into a position to make plays, and just let them do it.

Chavis should be thanking God every day there wasn't a spot for his BBQ bud in Brick Haley. It didn't matter how good LSU's secondary was when the quarterback could solve a rubik's cube, then make the pass. LSU hasn't had a pass rush since it had 2 first round DL and a 1st team All-SEC lineman up front.

There's no doubt in my mind Chavis can get A&M's defense to top 10 in the conference. That doesn't mean I buy Sumlin's offense though. I'm interested to see what suggestions Chavis makes to sumlin's scheme, because I haven't been nervous about A&M's play calling or offensive talent since the first half of the 2012 LSU-A&M game

And LSU always played very fundamentally sound. That was probably a tribute to both Chief and the position coaches, but LSU's guys were very talented but they also always tackled well, never seemed to be out of position and generally did what they were supposed to do. In contract, A&M had less talented players who did none of those things. So, I anticipate they will improve solely because of that.

Well, he hasn't since 2008. Even when he blizted the LBs at LSU it seemed it was more of a containment blitz than an attacking one.

Maybe he's gotten soft is his old age?

Tennessee fans used to complain about the Mustang Package as much or more than LSU fans do.

They can tick off a list of late drive losses that were because Chavis went into monster prevents and gave up chunks of 20-30 yards in 10 seconds.

AND to be clear, aTm very well might be able to attain that NFL type talent. But that remains to be seen.

I actually don't understand why he hasn't attempted to be a D coordinator in the NFL, considering his style.

Agree - and I'm not convinced they don't have any there right now. They've signed guys who should be good players, maybe it is too late for some of them.

But even you would say he is competent. That is what we needed.

Heck any real "game changer" coordinator, some real innovator, wouldn't come to A&M where the number of plays would force you to play all your cards too early in the season. It wouldn't work out for them, and it wouldn't work out for us. What we need is competency, consistency and simplicity so the best talent on our roster (that is young) can make an impact early.

Honest question - where would you put Arkansas? I had them at 6, but I can't move them much higher than 5.

I'm pretty confident we'll be in the top 5. We lost our best players from last year, but two of them only came in to their own when Smith came, and we'll still probably have more depth overall this year, especially in the secondary.

Totally agree, that is why I think you guys will be significantly better on defense this year, especially against bad teams. You will know where you are supposed to be, tackle in space (better at least), etc. That will be a massive improvement from the past 2-3 years.

DC's in the NFL have to get creative with blitzes. That's one thing Chavis absolutely does not do.

Yea - hard to rely on CB's in the NFL to sit back and cover for 7 seconds and let your pass rush suffocate the pocket.

Well Chavis relies on very great DB play, and aTm is lacking in that department. They do not have the personnel to go man on everyone. IMO.

what's odd is that he did a lot more of that while at UT. He had a shift in philosophy at some point.

I think Auburn ends up in the top 6. We'll have a pass rush again with Tray Mathews shoring up the back end. I fully expect LB play to be a lot better also.

I'm curious to see where Missou's defense ends up after the loss of Steckel.

Chavis' blitz packages are as vanilla as his mustang. Everyone knows when they're coming.

Mizzou is better than last year in 9 or the 11 spots. Overall we're better next season.
