On the rant there was a post of another map with different stereotypes for each state. One of them got me to thinking about Welfare, so I decided to do a little digging to see what I could find.
Also, here is another one and some of this stuff blew my mind.
Let's see where the discussion takes us...

From the U.S. Census Bureau, reported by Investor’s Business Daily:
At the end of 2011, the last year for which data are available, some 108.6 million people received one or more means-tested government benefit programs — bureaucratese for welfare. Meanwhile, there were just 101.7 million people with full-time jobs, the Census data show, including both the private and government sectors. What's to discuss?
It is what it is, and it's not changing anytime soon. The people that we have chosen as our leaders are corrupt to the core.

That is such a misleading title. A good many people on welfare do work, they just work crappy jobs that don't pay well.

Some of those amounts are way too high. I believe in welfare as a sum of money to help you get on your feet, but not to pay more than minimum wage.

This I agree with, unfortunately.

While I agree, I'm not sure where you're going here...

No way this thread ends well.

There is a broad swath of counties from the Mississippi delta almost to the South Carolina coast (former plantation country) where poverty is epidemic. Almost the entire population of some of these counties receives welfare.
It cuts right across the heart of Georgia, as well, but I assume that the Atlanta suburbs pull the state above the 50/50 point.

I don't think that's what that particular article was talking about.

I'll venture a guess that he's suggesting that politicians are pandering to the Free shite Army and trading ever-increasing welfare benefits for their votes.

Which is why there should be a limit for how long you can receive such benefits, outside of extenuating circumstances of course.
I.E. Disabilities and such

I didn't really want it to. Discussion where everyone agrees is no fun at all.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about it that way but there is no doubt that is happening. Hell, one of Obama's first campaign points was that he was going to pay for cell phones and electricity bills.

Have a link to the article then? The title seems to imply that in those states listed, there are more people not working and receiving welfare benefits than there are people working.

There is a separate benefit system for that.

2 to 5 years 26.9%
Over 5 years 19.6%
Almost half are on welfare more than 2 years.

I thought welfare was a pretty general term, but I understand that you mean there is a specific system for such things, which is where I would say time limits could be excluded.

mandatory drug testing for all welfare participents should be the norm.

I believe in social safety nets. I don't agree with welfare's current form. I don't agree with food stamps being a blank debit card you can use however you choose. I don't agree with welfare making people comfortable. I think the epidemic of overspending doesn't need to start with addressing welfare, but I think it should get there eventually. There are much bigger problems than the overspending relating to welfare. I essentially disagree with the arguments presented by both sides.

Very true. And I'm not sure if it's mentioned in those stats, but there are lots of single moms who are working full time at decent paying jobs that are receiving government assistance of some kind. I met 3 government employees in Florence today who have kids on Medicaid.
