No you ignorant arse. This is an assault on The 1st Amendment.
This is how Rights are eroded. You chip away around the edges.

The first amendment clearly protects his right to have the government fly the flag of his choosing. Do you even constitution, bro?

The U.S. federal government is corrupt, evil and oppressive.
Maybe the rebels were just ahead of their time.

It's not like Obama sent down troops to tear down the flag.
This was voted on by the SC government with the full support of the Governor. Didn't y'all say just a few weeks ago that this should be left up to the state? Well the state voted, and it's coming down, so what's the problem. How has the constitution been violated?

I was being sarcastic. Honestly thought it was obvious.
Of course the first amendment protects private speech. Anyone can fly a flag at their house. The right to have the government fly a flag you really like isn't a first amendment protection.

No it doesn't. It shows that when people get their feelings hurt and want a knee jerk reaction, that their wishes will be granted.
People in this state wanted this flag gone for years now. Their side didn't gain any traction unfortunately until the shooting.

People have asked this over and over but why doesn't someone tell me again. What flag was flown over the slaver ships coming to America? It wasn't the confederate cross or stars and bars. Why don't we remove that flag as well?
Because the Stars and Stripes have flown over all Negro battalions in the civil war, Black Churches, Black schools, Black Universities, Black towns, and many many many many marches for freedom and civil rights. And not just for black people, but for women, the Irish, the Jews, and most recently the gays. So yeah the US flag has a dark and bloody history, as does any flag, and any country. But it has also stood as a symbol for freedom and tolerance for far longer, and not even you can deny that.

Ooooh because that doesn't fit the narrative that only the south was/is racist.
It's mighty hard to convince someone from outside your state that you're not racist when you fly a flag that has been used for racism and the defiance of civil rights. Doesn't exactly scream "progressive".

Sorry about that. I've been on the defensive here.

Meanwhile people are still beating and killing each other because they have different skin colors. I understand how that flag can make people feel but let's start looking at the real problem and it's root causes. If we can start to fix those then I will be impressed that the politicians did something. In my honest opinion removing that flag just gives it more power to represent hate. There is so much more wrong with our society in that regard that we should be focusing on. Jmo
So you honestly think that they aren't going to fix the other problems because it came down?

I think a better way of phrasing it is that politicians (and probably people in general) are much better at symbolic gestures than problem solving. So if you're expecting some sort of epiphany from politicians in fixing racially-related and -influenced issues, you're probably going to be disappointed.

I wouldn't be trying to convince someone I'm not a racist if they're moronic enough to think I'm automatically a racist because of something my state government chooses to do.

I'm upset at how much I've agreed with you recently 808.

Is it going to encourage families that have been raised in a racist environment to suddenly change that mentality? Address mental illness/health in all communities? Removed community "leaders" like Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson who directly profit from the oppression of African-Americans?
Taking down a flag isn't fixing any of that. And I don't see many politicians standing up to propose solutions to any of that either.

I saw a study yesterday that less than 10% of Americans understand what The First Amendment does.
Those of you mocking me have proven that study true.
We are doomed.
