SC House Votes to remove flag: it's coming down folks

Vote was 94-20.
And for all of you flag supporters.... Please listen to Rep Jenny Horne (who is not only a Republican, but a descendant of Jefferson Davis) as to why it needs to come down.
Yes racism won't magically go away in SC or around the nation. No one is that delusional to think that. But this is a step in the right direction, and shows just how far we have all come as a state and as a nation. I can say that I have NEVER been prouder of the state of South Carolina than I am this morning.

If it ends at the removal of just the flag. Unfortunately it hasn't and we now have the extreme of city councils voting to remove the bodies of former Confederate soldiers.

Finally, racism is no more.

Good on South Carolina!

I'm so relieved.

Meanwhile people are still beating and killing each other because they have different skin colors. I understand how that flag can make people feel but let's start looking at the real problem and it's root causes. If we can start to fix those then I will be impressed that the politicians did something. In my honest opinion removing that flag just gives it more power to represent hate. There is so much more wrong with our society in that regard that we should be focusing on. Jmo

Okay Rosa Parks, what shall we do? What plan of action do you suggest?

Maybe the government should make us all wake up every morning and paint our skin the same color. Thats literally the only way racism will ever cease to exist.

I don't get this sentiment. I understand wanting the flag down. That was overdue, frankly. But the same people live in the state that did yesterday. Their attitudes are pretty much the same (with the exception of a reasonable sized group of people who didn't like this move and are angry about it). There's nothing to be more proud of or less proud of.

Not really....it's obvious that the flag had some magic spell cast on whitey and that's makes us do racist and stupid things.

No it doesn't. It shows that when people get their feelings hurt and want a knee jerk reaction, that their wishes will be granted.
People have asked this over and over but why doesn't someone tell me again. What flag was flown over the slaver ships coming to America? It wasn't the confederate cross or stars and bars. Why don't we remove that flag as well?
Ooooh because that doesn't fit the narrative that only the south was/is racist.

I don't know because I'm not a bigot. So I have no clue what needs to be done to educate bigots on the fact that just because someone has a different color skin than you doesn't make them any less a person than you are. If I had all the answers I'd be president but I don't. I do know that the communities of all races need to step up and teach responsibility for your actions to everyone and that if you do or don't succeed that it's not someone else's fault. That's all I got at the moment I'm to busy pulling myself out of a useless parasitic life to give it much more thought. How about some of you enlightened college educated folks use that enlightenment and education to help instead of pushing it all aside in the name of the almighty dollar and try to fix some things.

Because, for possibly the first time EVER, or General Assembly actually got something right.

Big fricking Deal.
Anybody who wants to fly a confederate flag on their own is still able to do so.

As it should be. If someone wants to fly the Nazi Flag or the SS flag at their house, then it is their RIGHT to fly whatever they want. This is about removing a flag on STATE HOUSE GROUNDS of a government that rose in rebellion and was defeated 150 years ago; a flag that was then placed atop the state house as symbol of the segregationists in the 1960's, only to be moved down to ground level 40 years later. It's high time the flag was removed. It was a blight on the state.

Nobody is saying they can't?
It shouldn't be flown on a government building though. You can't deny that.

American flag, and it's not removed because it is, despite its sometimes ugly history, the official flag of this country. The Confederate flag is the flag of an entity that lost the war 150 years ago. And yes, I know the flag the fight is over currently isn't the official flag of the Confederacy, so save it.
You surely cannot be this ignorant.

I am fine with it coming down from a state house.
Taking it down from memorials though? That's erasing history, and nothing good ever came from erasing history.

That is not a requirement for that job.

That lesson quit being taught years ago, it is always someone elses fault and that mindset is facilitated on a daily basis. That line of thinking is why this whole flag thing came up. I'm not for or against the flag, but I am against political bodies using a tragic event and knee jerk reactions to push some personal agendas.
