Sounds like a terrible analysis
Why terrible? The Rockets and Celtics have cap space and star players to match him with, and he's already in Miami. Why wouldn't they be logical destinations? Not trying to argue, just curious about your logic here. This is a more entertaining topic than soccer right now as far as I'm concerned.
re: Underrated Recruit That LSU Missed Out On Recently That You Really Wanted

He wasn't underrated and it's been a few years but one guy I wonder about sometimes is Akiem Hicks. His recruitment blew up and he ended up in Canada, but from the way he looks in the NFL he would have been a big time player at LSU. Always need another great D-Lineman you know.

I don't want to play there, but at my age and physical condition those young bucks would kill me! Seriously though, I think the NFL track record and the playing true freshman track record are LSU's 2 best arguments for out of state recruits.

I've always imagined that if LSU would hire Ed O that he would do something like this, intentionally.
Ed O. would never get busted on something smalltime like this. He'd be photographed delivering the kid a brand new Camaro with a suitcase full of cash in the trunk at the very least.
What went wrong with the Heat?

I tried to organize my thoughts in the linked post, I wonder what other people feel. Seeing a 2 time defending champ unravel like that was certainly a unique experience for me.

Interesting thought, if the NBA is passing out lifetime bans for racist remarks who is eligible to be banned and who will get the next ban?

Jim Mora Coaching Tree
Posted by scottynola on 4/15/14 at 1:51 pm
I wrote a blog post today, part of a series of coaches who succeeded without sticking to a single system. I included Mora because he won in New Orleans with a great defense and so-so offense, and in Indy with a great offense and so-so defense. One item I mentioned was the number of future head coaches who were with the Saints during Mora's tenure. Jack Del Rio and Mike Tice were both players under Mora, and Dom Capers and his son Jim Mora Jr. coached under him. Did I miss anyone? I keep thinking there was another but I'm not coming up with anything.
Here's the article if anyone is curious: Jim Mora

I have a few favorites, along with the originals, but there are a lot out there. Can anyone add to the list of really excellent ones?

re: Should we?? Alex Mack - Center
Posted by scottynola on 3/18/14 at 5:02 pm
The only way for this to happen is to negotiate a sign and trade type arrangement with the Browns. Some think that is against the NFL rules, not technically, the Patriots worked out something like that with the Dolphins for Welker a few years ago. Basically the Saints would have to negotiate a deal with Mack, leave it unsinged, trade Cleveland for his rights then sign the contract.
Having said all that no, not happening. Would be nice, he's an upgrade at a critical position, but not happening.

If Mosley can be that fast LB who can range the middle of the field and cover TE's and backs on passing routes then I am all for it. We desperately need someone like that. But I'll be happy with a CB or WR.

Most prominent rumor on Eugene was pot, but we'll never know. He showed promise so I doubt he'd transfer on his own.
According to NOLA.com he was dismissed from the team, didn't leave voluntarily, but they didn't give a reason.

I saw that on NOLA.com and came over here to check and see if anyone had comments on how it might effect recruiting. It opens up extra scholly's, and I think this is a good sign. I kind of read the tea leaves on which athletes are being recruited heavily, and compare that to remaining scholly's a lot. When there are only a few openings left and the coaches are going after guyswho look like a fallback option I figure they see the writing on the wall with a top player and are looking to replace him. With more slots to fill I think maybe they are trying to get the top guy and another guy too, not either or. Hopefully we get a few of the top names on the board and find a couple of quality three star diamond in the rough guys too.
re: What gets a guy to the NFL? (Nature vs Nurture)
Posted by scottynola on 1/22/14 at 7:49 pm
Coaching only gets you so far, imo. Same with nature, honestly. If you look at NFL players they all have the genetic potential to develop the kind of bodies the NFL requires. Of all the guys with this DNA, of the ones who actually play in HS, excel, work out, and get enough exposure to get into football schools that is your pool of possibles. Coaching certainly helps at that point, but if you have ever seen anyone associated with the NFL talk about what it takes to make the next step, whether it's players, coaches, scouts, management, whatever, all of them say the same things. The guys in the league are not the most gifted athletes, they are the hardest workers at every level. That's character, not nature or nurture. The one exception is probably QB's, I believe a great quarterback is born, not made. They have arm talent, vision, an ability to focus and think under high stress and most importantly the great ones are wired as pure predators. They see the whole field as their property, the guys on their team and the opposing defense as pawns to be dominated and used, and when the opening is there they consider it theirs by right and take it without hesitation. You can't really coach that attitude. Mechanics, reading defenses, conditioning, you can coach that but not the attitude.
re: LSU, Launching pad for NFL, recruiting tool but, leaving early just ain't cool!
Posted by scottynola on 1/7/14 at 10:02 am
The best athletes can go three and out. If you want LSU to have the best athletes, then expect more three and outs. It should be a point of pride that we get more guys to the NFL quicker than other teams, and as a result there are more opportunities for talented young players to get on the field and start making a name for themselves early.
