re: Greatest year ever for special teams?
Posted by StTammanyTiger88 on 12/30/11 at 12:56 pm to StTammanyTiger88
The hiring of Thomas McGaughey as special teams coach is one of those great moves which went under the radar. Can anyone think of a comparable year in both returns and kick coverage? I think Beckham Jr. may have muffed a punt at one time, but nothing really stands out given the overall season. BTW: I kind of liked all the video effects (made it unique) but the music isn't to my taste. :usa: :geauxtigers:

Get it Started Video
I can't recall a better all around year in both returns and coverage. The depth is amazing. Love the effects on the Landry crush against Auburn. :usa: :geauxtigers:

Bear Bryant and Nick Saban video
Simple yet classy Alabama and SEC video with Nick Saban and Bear Bryant sound bites from an LSU guy. With all the other conferencing trashing the SEC, it is nice to see something like this. I wish the announcements had been quicker at the time, but I never held anything against Saban for going to the NFL. He reestablished an attitude of consistent winning here, and what boy old enough to remember him didn’t think about having the Bear for a coach at least once. The SEC will hit you harder than any conference, fans will be louder, but we also know about respect. :usa: :geauxtigers:

Thanks RiverTiger, Gravitiger, adn tiger89. Few kickers are drafted with the most notable exception of course being Hall of Famer Saint Russell Erxleben. I may be confused in my old age, but I need to look up if that basketball pass overtime interception against the Falcons years ago was his. Didn’t know Jasper got a camp try with the Bucs. I am surprised that I never see his name mentioned as a candidate when you have emergency kicker auditions because of injuries. Of course many times that retired 40+ veteran can still do the job and has the past record which makes that call easier.
LSU Kickers

As a new member of this group, I’m guessing this topic has come up before in different fashions so it is posed more for curiosity than long discussion.
Does anyone know how many LSU kickers and punters have made it to the NFL or at least received invitations to training camps? Played Arena Leagues, USFL, Europe, or Canada? I know of Donnie Jones and Wade Richey in the NFL from my era (1st time in the stands as a kid in 1975, and my Dad got the season tickets that remain in the family in 76), but I’m curious if guys like David and in particular Jasper ever had the opportunity to play professional football at any level.

Well I’m of that old school generation that cares more about substance than flash. I liked it when teachers taught instead of trying to entertain and think football games are won and lost by the play of the offensive line. Keep the fancy graphics and Gary Crowton style offenses, and give me old fashioned books to read and smash mouth football where you help the guy up that you pancaked during the play. Nothing wrong with the new, but fancier and more modern does not always mean better. :usa:
All the negativity about the SEC
Posted by StTammanyTiger88 on 11/30/11 at 3:39 pm
It seems that wherever I turn I see someone trashing the SEC because of the BCS. Of course it is debatable, but I feel the best two teams this year are LSU and Alabama. If either had such a poor offense as the other boards would have you believe, then why couldn't anyone else stop Bama or LSU? I'll give Oklahoma State credit and say that Coach Budke's death had an emotional impact on their game against ISU. Thought he was a good coach when he was in Ruston and find his loss a tragedy. Even though I hate to admit it, Boise only lost to TCU which is itself a very good team. Like Bama, more emphasis on special teams may have left them undefeated as well.
Sorry for the rant, but I'll always be SEC first. Enjoyed this video because it is one of the few things I've seen not trashing the SEC. Thought some who are fed up like me might enjoy it also. Well argued BCS videos on the page as well.
Looking forward to the game video :usa: :geauxtigers:

SEC Championship Game Public Perception

Finally a video by someone who obviously supports LSU but does not diss the other team and the entire conference. Sorry but on some of the boards I'm seeing all this BS about Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and LSU for weak schedules. By attacking ourselves we feed into the idea that we are not the strongest football conference top to bottom. FYI: not flashy but good BCS analysis videos on this page as well.

re: Is it just me or have television announcers just gotten that bad?

Patches, I'll agree with you that Hawthorne gets negative at times. TN last year and the clock management problems illustrate that. Personally, I don't mind a local announcer questioning coaching decisions of his own team given the dollars coaches make these days. I suspect that you and I would agree that all SEC radio announcers put those new TV commentators to shame. In the olden days, you did have some good ones on TV, but I have a hard time naming any today.
Where have all the good, let alone great, announcers gone?

Nice tribute for two of the best: Larry Munson (RIP) or UGA and Jim Hawthorne of LSU

All the techno graphics in the world don’t make up for not knowing anything about the game. The mute button has become the most used part of the remote for television games. I’m thankful for my old fashioned radio for the call, and that we still have some great play-by-play people and analysts. Just wish you could always synch it with the TV.
Nice recognition of Jim Hawthorne and the late Larry Munson here. :geauxtigers:

re: Which Senior will be the most difficult to replace next year?
Posted by StTammanyTiger88 on 11/22/11 at 8:47 pm to StTammanyTiger88
One thing all the responses have proved is that we are a deep team, seniors through underclassmen. Yes, we have some star quality players, but we also have players on the field and bench who would be stars at other schools but are willing to be part of the supporting cast. I think what sets this team apart from others is that it is a TEAM where the 11 guys on the field at any given time function as a unit and not just prima donnas wanting to rack up stats for themselves. :geauxtigers: :usa:
Which Senior will be the most difficult to replace next year?
Posted by StTammanyTiger88 on 11/22/11 at 6:09 pm
We have a solid group of seniors this year and even though most are not the most recognizable of names to the casual fan, their contributions are easily seen in our record this year. A lot of people would name the QBs or look to the D with Brooks, Baker, Hatcher, etc. Some will look at our Offensive line. I’ll argue our long snapper, #50 Joey Crappell. Can anyone recall even 1 bad snap he has made? :geauxtigers:

Great official video. I really find this guy's funny, and they do piss off Hogs. Mike and Razorback Ribs Petrino caught by a Falcon and listening to a Hog

People are ripping this and especially the Bobby Petrino and Saban ones, but I think they are funny as heck. I like the simpler graphics and animations and unlike many videos these actually display some football intelligence and knowledge of sports history. Honestly, I never thought of how valuable Joey Crappell has been this season until watching this guy’s special teams cartoon. Has he ever had a deep snap even close to being off target?

re: Is our fan base divided or do we just have a few select idiots?
Posted by StTammanyTiger88 on 11/21/11 at 3:24 pm to LSUzealot
I think you have an equal number of idiots and an equal number of fair weathered fans who jump on and off the bandwagon. I sat through the fumbles of Stovall and the Veer offense, the infamous drop linebacker defense, and so on without giving up my season tickets. Actual knowledge of football has dropped in my section. When I was younger there was an older man who had his stopwatch out every punt for both kick and hang time. He only yelled toward the field when the opponent’s defense was about to blitz. He joked to my Dad that he had a blinking light in his binoculars, and I tried to get my Dad to buy me the same type of binoculars. Turned out the old guy had played for Army and coached in high school after his service. I’ll always remember USC in 1979 when after the game he walked toward these very enthusiastic Trojan fans; shook their hands, said the more talented team won, but it was a game that he would take any day over a cupcake blowout. Today, the “Tiger Bait” kids in those same seats cuss the players and coaching staff and leave in the 3rd quarter regardless of score until they repeat for the next home game.
Personally, I think this season has been magical. Regardless of who is in the game, those boys hustle every play. Chavis is like Bo Pelini in that defense involves working on the basics in practice and then trusting your instincts and not thinking too much in the game. The Reid interception against AL is a great example. On offense, now that we no longer have these mass substitutions and formation changes every play, those players can just play the game. Unlike many teams, we have solid and well coached special teams. I never thought about it until watching a kid’s YouTube video, but Joey Crappell will be a key to replace for next year. I don’t think he has ever had a poor long snap since he took over.
Thanks for the post because it brings back smiles to think of some of those long ago fans that I used to watch.
