This drive is good for the Texas D

They’ve already been on the field for 81 plays
Different level....hoping for a full year of him next year.
He made some good plays but I think Gilbert is more of a natural safety. Toviano seems to be more of an athlete playing safety than a safety.
Maybe in Year #1...but I think it's a good thing long term. Having two power conferences with all these teams that don't fit naturally together doesn't feel right. Texas should go back to the big 12 as should Oklahoma and A&M. Same for Oregon, UCLA and USC for the Pac 12. Once teams realize its an easier path to get the the playoffs from their natural conference than where they are, maybe they will realign the realignment and some sanity will come back to college football.

re: Let's talk about Nuss...

if Anderson catches the TD pass and we hit the FG and Extra point, we'd be talking about how Nuss lead the team to a blowout win.

His interception was to a Defensive End who dropped in coverage. The guy is usually not going to be there and he made a good catch on the ball.

I expect Nuss is going to be pretty awesome next year. Possible Heisman NY invitee
I thought he was a solid QB. Good decisions for the most part. Ran some when he had the opportunity. Gave his guys balls to catch. Not Jayden but a solid, college QB.

Punters

Was at the game including warmups so got to watch the punters a bunch.

Observations:
1. Both punters regularly hit 40+ yard punts in practice
2. #99 Ochendorf's punt regularly rolls over in the air. #38 Todd's balls do not leading to shorter punts.
3. Todd's leg cadence seems to be too quick. Instead of swinging his leg at the ball and let the punt happen, he seems to go at it too quick and this leads to inconsistency. It's something he can probably groove in practice but it's not very repeatable in games.
4. Oscendorf seems like the better punter right now. He should work on getting more consistent and converting his good practice punts over to the game environment.

Both guys would be well served with a coach or consultant who specializes in punting.

re: DeBose contract details

Saban is a hard act to follow (understatement from Capt Obvious). Coaches who can have that kind or run are once in a generation. Maybe Deboer will do that. Saban didn't start out at Alabama that well.

If I were an Alabama fan, the main thing I would be concerned about at this point is the inconsistency his team had in year 1. Vandy and OU are not good teams...he should have had them better ready for those game. That's one of the things I'd be looking for in terms of improvement from him in Year 2.

Corner Play

Posted by mikecno on 1/1/25 at 7:09 am
Here's my observations on our corner play from the game (I was at the game so got to focus on the corners some).

They are good at staying with the receivers for the most part.
PJ Woodland has the best technique of the group.
Zy is physical, tackles well and stays with the receivers but doesn't look for, or react to, the ball.
When Zy went down, Michael Turner came in as the third corner.

Baylor's receivers got open mostly not by speed or running good routes but by using subtle push off moves which are very common in college football. Refs were allowing them to play for the most part so this worked well for them and lead to a lot of their completions. Our guys didn't adjust to this technique very well and for the most part don't look for the ball or play the receiver's hands when they went up for the ball. So, while our guys were close in coverage a lot, they weren't able to finish the plays.

Improving corner play especially reacting better to the push off moves and playing the ball should be a priority for spring ball.

Go Tigers !!

It was an impressive win. Our coaches did an excellent job preparing the team

re: Alabama fans, how did this happen?

the downward spiral has begun
that’s a DKR thing…leave him in Austin. No road trip for the beaver
a large frickin’ animal
Alabama takes care of business at OU and they are in
