The AJC has confirmed that legendary UGA broadcaster Larry Munson passed away tonight. He was 89.

What benefit did Charles receive?

The only thing mentioned was "impermissible contact" by the UM booster.

Basically, this would be the same thing if Nick Saban had impermissible contact with Isaiah Crowell. This might affect his eligibility at Alabama, but not at Georgia. Especially since he didn't receive any benefit.

However, if he did receive free shoes, a jersey, etc, than it would be completely different

Ineligible player is ineligible....

He would only be ineligible if he went to Miami, he didn't commit any violations
Neither do I, sounds like more of an issue with what Nevin Shapiro did, than what Charles did. He just went on what he thought was a visit, didn't accept any benefits. Now if he went to Miami, then it would have been a problem

Miami booster Nevin Shapiro alleges he had improper recruiting contact with Orson Charles after the player’s junior year in high school. Among the booster’s allegations:

Charles visited Shapiro’s $6 million Miami Beach mansion in 2008 with his high school coach Robert Weiner and then-Hurricanes quarterback Robert Marve.

Shapiro knowingly had impermissible contact when he gave Charles a tour of his home while pitching a potential commitment to Miami. At the time, the Hurricanes were recruiting Charles.

If you want to discuss the crux of the story as it relates to UM, this is the place for you.

Yahoo Sports: Renegade Miami football booster spells out illicit benefits to players
quote:

KEARNEY, N.J. – A University of Miami booster, incarcerated for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, has told Yahoo! Sports he provided thousands of impermissible benefits to at least 72 athletes from 2002 through 2010.

In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.

The NCAA is a reactive body,

The Columbus paper reported this issue, Georgia looked into it, and sent it to the SEC/NCAA

The NCAA ONLY looked into this because the Columbus paper wrote about it.

If the Columbus paper didn't get the police documents, then this wouldn't have become public knowledge.

And that is the problem with the NCAA, they aren't big enough to monitor college football, which is the reason for the inconsistencies
NCAA Response to UGA Report Received

For Immediate Release
August 9, 2011

ATHENS------ The University of Georgia compliance office
was notified late Monday by the NCAA that it had reviewed the University¹s
report on UGA linebacker Jarvis Jones and found no violation of NCAA rules.

Statement from UGA head coach Mark Richt:
"I appreciate the work of our compliance office for its time and effort in
providing a thorough, comprehensive report and I'm thankful for the timely
manner in which the NCAA reviewed and evaluated all the facts to reach a
decision. We're ready to move on with preparations for our season opener."

If they think it would be better for college football, then they have the power to do that already for their team. It's simple, just redshirt the entire freshman class.

But the idea of making guys like A.J. Green, Julio Jones, etc... sit during their freshman year, leaving them only 2 years to play college football is beyond me.

UGA TB Washaun Ealey to transfer

Posted by Dawgs1980 on 5/9/11 at 6:03 pm
UGA release

ATHENS---------University of Georgia tailback Washaun Ealey has been granted an unconditional release to transfer to another institution for the 2011 academic year according to UGA head coach Mark Richt.

“Washaun and I have had several conversations in recent weeks,” said Richt. “We both have come to the conclusion that a transfer to another institution would be in his best interest.”

A rising junior from Stillmore, Ga., Ealey has played in 21 games including nine starts during his two-year career at UGA and rushed for 1,528 yards (717 in 2009 and 811 in 2010).
