401k/Roth IRA question

Posted by tiger10lsu on 12/9/19 at 6:44 pm
I recently started with a large company that contributes to my 401k that I just became eligible for in October. I currently have a personal Roth IRA that I am not allowed to roll into the company 401k. I don’t need two retirement accounts so I’m unsure of what to do with it.

1. Stop contributing to the Roth and just let it build

2. Take out the funds($33,000) and get hit with a penalty ($1,600)

If it makes any difference, I have a 4 month old son and need to upgrade in house size.

Use it for a better savings plan? Use it for down payment on a bigger house? CD?

Thanks in advance
Recently closed a family business and am starting the job search after 10 years. Indeed seems like it has the same stuff everyday. Any others found success elsewhere?

Thanks
Dont do it. I run a machine shop. We use a portable mig gun or tig weld on site. If you want to get it done, go with the SS rivets and permatex
Yes. I would be selling the house and taking the profit to purchase the new home. Bought for $209,000. Owe about $185,000. Worth about $230,000.
Background: Bought my house for $209,000 4 years ago with an FHA loan and pay about $130 in PMI which I hate and apparently cant get rid of without refinancing. I don't plan to do that since my interest rate is 3.375% and dont want to drop PMI for a higher rate. I do plan on moving in 2-4 years once we decide to have a 2nd child.

Every month I typically pay an extra $150 in principal towards the mortgage and have been since I've been in the house.

Is it smarter to save that $150 every month and put in a separate account to make sure I have 20% for house #2 and avoid FHA and PMI payments?

At this point, I don't see a benefit to paying that extra $150 every month when it is not allowed to get rid of PMI.

The showers are not custom built. They look like a normal drop in tub.

The attic has an automatic fan that kicks on when it reaches about 100 degrees. It also has the vent screens on the underside of the attic around the whole house.

The attic is the typical fiberglass roll out insulation.

We have no carpet in the entire house. Most the times we keep the closet doors open for airflow even though I'd love to close them.

I purchased gutters to help push water away from the house.

I'm going to do the humidity test with the AC guy and talk about some type of fan/vent in the closets or a whole house dehumidifier.

Thanks so much for the reply. My problem is having no idea as to where it is coming from. No broken pipes. HVAC unit is 3 ton for a 1400 sf house so that can't be it.

The only thing I can come up with is the access panels in the closet are allowing moisture from below the slab into the closets. We have to have the access panels so:

I contacted my AC guy to come see his thoughts and maybe put some vents in the closets to get air flow in them or add vents. I'm stumped as to where else it could be coming from

The house is on a slab and I only notice mold on clothes/shoes in the closet. Never outside a closet. The water heater is outside so thats not it. 2 of the 3 closets backup to a bathroom where they have an inspection door for plumbers

drop in the bucket if you are paying someone who can find the actual problem.

Yea lets say I pay the $700 and they say it will cost $20,000 to rip out a wall and repair a pipe under the tub. Thats not gonna happen so I just pissed away $700

Indoor mold issues in home

I've been in my house for about 4 years and have always had some mold issues in the closets where I am constantly using damp rid but my clothes and shoes still get mold on them.

Now I have a baby on the way and am nervous to put her in a room and her stuff in a closet that has had mold on my clothes.

The house was completely gutted to the studs in 2013 and I have no water leaks. I have called two air quality pro's to get a price on an assessment and they were $475 and $700. Not including any mold remediation.

Ya'll got any other pointers? Thanks
So every year we usually do a long weekend at the beach club in Gulf Shores with my dad, brothers family, sisters family and my own. This year my brothers wife is due in July and mine in August. My question is:

Any good family summer vacations locally that don't involve a hot sandy beach for pregnant people? It would also be my Dad's 70th birthday which is why I don't want to cancel all together. Under 4-5 hours from New Orleans if possible

Thanks!
We stayed at La Toc 2 years ago.

The zip lining was fun. I wasn't interested but the wife was. I'm glad we did it.

Joe knows tour is a must.

We went to the Grand for a day and wish we would have done two days. If I were to do it again, we would stay there. The vibe at the beach/pool is much better for a younger couple. La Toc is much more laid back focused on food.

Oh and Joe knows tour is a must

Helicopter ride is for vaginas FYI
I am currently maxing out my Roth IRA and plan to as long as I can. The $10,000 we have in a general savings account is for future baby and "rainy day" funds. Do you get your HSA thru your healthcare provider?

Newborn baby savings/finance plan?

My wife and I just found out we will be having our first child, middle of August. I knew this would be coming eventually and we have saved about $10,000 for it.

My question is: Do any of you recommend any savings plans while we are still 6 months out?

Like a health savings account or 6 month CD to help with out of pocket costs? Or any tax incentive type stuff? Any info is appreciated
My wife and I have been looking for homes for roughly a year now because our current home is getting tight especially with a child on the way. The cost for the homes are crazy IMO.

Then I realized I have the land and wanted to looking into the idea of adding on the current home for an extra bedroom and more storage space. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Damn. I guess I will have to wait for the rate to get closer to mine and make the jump. I can't stand throwing that $140 per month away.
