re: Napa Trip Last Week - updated report on Wineries
Posted by SuperDomed on 8/17/25 at 5:39 pm to WacoTiger
Just wanted to post a follow up here after my recent visit to Napa. The absolute standout of the trip was visiting Mowe and Dustin and Rene. That cab they are growing on their small 1 acre property is incredible-the best wine we had all trip. They said they recently got on the wine list at French Laundry but because of such limited supply they have they can’t keep up with the demand! This wine is an absolute stud and I encourage anyone going out to Napa to reach out to them and schedule a tasting. Was able to buy 1 case for this years release coming later this fall, but the allocation is extremely limited.
Funny story I told them I’ve seen them mentioned on tigerdroppings and she mentioned you by name.

re: Road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane itinerary help

I would argue you’re missing out on one of the most beautiful adventures you can do in Australia, Great Ocean Road. It’s just southwest of the city center and about 150 miles of road along the coast. I would try to organize that to be the beginning of the trip, and condense some of the other stops between Melbourne and Sydney. Some really cool stops between Sydney and Brisbane, I’d probably keep that as is. Highlight of your trip will likely be Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where you get to hold a koala and take a photo. I still remember the name of the one I first took a photo with (Cinnamon). Went back to Australia about 10 years later and she was still alive! In the “retirement” area of the park, no longer taking photos.

Do lots of dead hangs, a few times every day. The classic RICE protocol has really been debunked over the last couple years and immobilization is arguably the worst thing you can do when looking at long term functionality.

Absolutely book the direct flights. We’ve flown a ton with infants and toddlers, the worst feeling in the world is being on a terrible flight (kids acting up) and knowing you have to get off the plane and do it all over again shortly after. The shortest total travel time is always the best solution.

I use it and think it’s been beneficial for me. Probably biggest thing I’ve noticed is improvement in my gut health. The rest may be placebo effect, but hey whatever works or makes you feel better, I’m all for it.

Now another thing to plan for is when the two parking garages are full (short and long term) and the only option left is the economy garage. You really need to look up online if the parking is full before you drive to the airport, so that you can add another 30 minutes to your planning.
If you know you’re flying out >24 hours in advance, the key is to pre book parking online. You’re guaranteed a spot even if the lot is full. Has saved me numerous times from having to make the trek to the economy garage

Second the barebells bars. Great for when I’m in a pinch at work and literally have no other food options.

Although I could do 50#, I think I’ll go the wise route and do 35# so I can still bend over comfortably all weekend

I just checked out the website and honestly that is about as far you can get from what we enjoy. That sounds like a miserable waste of 2-3 hours for us. Different strokes for different folks I guess
Apologies, I do believe they have the traditional chain restaurants there as well along with a super sized Diet Coke

You MUST have dinner at Diver XO in Madrid. Absolute best meal and dinner experience my wife and I have ever had. We also did the wine pairing as their sommelier just won the award of "best sommelier in the world." It's worth a detour and even scheduling around making sure you can eat there.

The problem I have with Detroit is the rental car situation. You have to get on a bus to get to the lot and it feels like it takes a while. Other than that, it’s a great airport.

I don’t really think it’s worth stressing out over reaching gold. The amount of platinum and diamond folks out there is incredible, making the free upgrades highly unlikely (which I think is the best perk of status)
re: Napa Hotel Recommendations

All of the BnB's in downtown Napa are fantastic. We stayed at the McClelland house and absolutely loved it. They do "happy hour" every night with wine and cheese and the owner of the house stops by and chats. They do breakfast every morning which is great, and we had a couple early days so they chef even came in early just to fix us breakfast. They're extremely accommodating and want to make your stay the best as possible. I believe there are a total of 5 rooms in the house. The owner told us Dave Chappelle stays there when he's in the area and rents the whole house out.

Northlake Passenger Transportation
Nice little mom and pop business. You can reserve your time on the website. I've used them for airport trips, date nights, etc. Highly recommend and they drive you in a nice, new clean Expedition
