They are independent. When events are independent you multiply the probabilities. (1/52)*(1/52)

Which tweets were these? I looked, but this guy tweets like 50 times a day, and I got bored before I could find anything.

Their offense is anemic. Their is ZERO ball movement. They cant even set a proper pick. It's worse than watching the NBA. It's all 1:1 garbage. Same thing happened the other night. They hit 3s in the 1st half but then got tired and could not create and hit tough shots. Rick Barry should be ashamed letting his kid play on that team under that bum.
He had this problem at Louisiana Tech, too. His teams do very well, so he can't be that bad, but I don't think he'll win a championship any time soon. I was shocked Florida made it this far in the tournament.
re: How many times have you been summoned for jury duty?
Posted by ortiz1193 on 3/20/17 at 6:44 pm
When I was 20, I served on a jury for a double homicide. There was a strong self-defense case but the other jurors weren't having it, and he got charged with manslaughter. The other charge was clear manslaughter. The trial was pretty intense - they even showed us pictures of the inside of the dead guy's skull (as if we were looking out through his eyes)
I got summoned again at the beginning of this school year, but I wasn't in my home city so I had an easy excuse.
So yeah, twice before I turned 23.

LA Tech vs. UAB basketball mass ejections
Posted by ortiz1193 on 1/26/17 at 10:05 pm
Small fight, but everyone cleared the benches and got automatic ejections.. All assistant coaches ejected. Tech played the last 5 minutes with 4 players.. UAB had 6 players.
re: do they still have academic competition "rallies" in Louisiana ?
Posted by ortiz1193 on 1/25/17 at 1:48 pm
They still have literary rally for a bunch of different subjects. There's a district competition and then the top scorers qualify for the state rally. I don't think you get scholarships for winning anything at state though. Maybe LSU gives a small state rally scholarship since they host it, but no other schools do.

This summer I was visiting a friend at the University of Alabama. We're standing on a patio at an apartment near campus, and this dude just runs straight off the road, rips a speed limit sign out of the ground and sends it flying, rips some other nice looking posts out of the ground. He and his girl get out of the car and look at the front. From over 50 yards away, we hear her scream "OOOO YOU IN TROUBLE".. then they get back in the car and drive off. We called campus police. Sadly for this guy, he drove the most unique car on campus. Black car. Bright red rims. Red stripe down the side. By the time the cop arrived at the scene he told us they had already got him. Police told us he wouldn't have been in any trouble if he didn't run.

It was an enjoyable game except for there being a foul called 8 out of every 10 possessions. Silva was a monster at the end of the game when it was close. I'm expecting us to be top 2 or 3 in CUSA, so we should be a decent win for you guys.
re: Louisiana Tech non-conference home basketball schedule is atrocious

I would argue that we have such a high winning percentage in the TAC because we don't play anyone OOC with a chance at beating us. We just have to win 1 or 2 tough CUSA games at home every year to rack up a 40-game home winning streak.

I had never heard of Maryland Eastern Shore until I looked at the schedule.
Also, Tech beat LSUS by 30+ last year... I vaguely remember a bunch of tiny white guys running around, but I might be getting them mixed up with Millsaps.

vs. Alabama State
vs. Oklahoma Baptist
vs. Maryland Eastern Shore
vs. Southeastern Louisiana
vs. Alcorn State
vs. Prairie View A&M
vs. Grambling (Bossier)
vs. LSUS
:yack:
vs. Florida Gulf Coast - only worthwhile game
I go to all the home games, and I will be bored out of my mind until January. The program has a lot of momentum over the last few years - talk about an energy killer. Our RPI will be so low that we're pretty much already eliminated from the NCAA tournament. It would probably take a 3 or 4 loss year to get in.

I saw The Descent in middle school and was absolutely horrified. It's the only movie I've seen to legitimately scare me... I was afraid to look outside the rest of the night
I also think I saw some scenes of Nightmare on Elm Street when I was like 9 and that also scared me a lot

Official Crystal Healing thread
Posted by ortiz1193 on 6/15/16 at 1:02 pm
I was recently introduced to the scientific field of "crystal healing." After the shock of discovering such a rare scientific discipline wore off, I began researching, leading to the discovery of this youtube channel that has everything you need to know about crystal healing. LINK
Each video is 3-5 minutes long. You can be well informed on the science of crystals in less than 30 minutes!
Before today, if you asked me how to cleanse a crystal I would have suggested using water, but now I know that you have to think about all the negativity in your life while using the water. Turns out blowing on the crystal is equally effective!
What are your favorite crystals? Personally, I'm eager to acquire a piece of cubic pyrite, which is especially important to the field of "sacred geometry." I can't believe I got an entire mathematics degree without knowing about that area! I haven't watched the video on love crystals, yet, so please let me know how it goes.

re: What have you read recently, and what are you currently reading?
Posted by ortiz1193 on 6/6/16 at 7:26 pm
I read pretty frequently and focus on classic, canonical works. In the last few weeks I've read
The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger) - About a few days in the life of 16 year old Holden Caulfield after he gets kicked out of his 3rd boarding school. He's pretty socially awkward and hates everything mainstream or "cool." He hates athletes, people who do anything to conform to society, etc. It's extremely easy to read, and it's written like a kid talking to you. I know a lot of people love this book, and I can see how a lot of people would like it at a certain age, especially high schoolers. I think I would've liked it more when I was that age, but I ended up thinking Holden was just a whiny loser by the end of the book.
Disgrace (Coetzee - South African) - About a college professor who sleeps with a student and then gets fired and moves out to live with his daughter in the country, where more bad things happen. It's set during apartheid, so it touches on some racial/poverty issues as well. It's written extremely concisely, but not casually, if that makes sense. I loved the writing. Easy to read, but not as if you were having a conversation with the author.
Portnoy's Complain (Roth) - This book is about Portnoy's conversation with his therapist. Only Portnoy speaks in the entire book. It's basically Portnoy ranting to his therapist about his sexual escapades, relationships with girls, relationships with his Jewish parents (Roth is Jewish and most of his books are about the lives of Jews). His Jewish parents are super Jewish and have oppressed him his entire life by being extremely controlling and Jewish and they are the reasons for his failures. It's extremely graphic, tons of explicit sexual acts, etc. Not necessarily a book you just want to be flashing around in public. It wasn't bad, but I think it probably gets some extra hype for how scandalous it is than it's quality as a novel. Did I mention Portnoy's parents are Jewish?
I'm working on As I Lay Dying (Faulkner) right now, since I only read the spark notes in high school. I think I'm going for Alice in Wonderland next week some time.
I should probably read Anne Frank at some point.

Merge LSUS-Tech-ULM, and put some of the saved funding into BPCC. That's the best solution for the Shreveport area imo.

West Monroe and Byrd at the top for sure.
