I do appreciate the compared to what question though. I would say the old system where car dealers would take care of the players instead of private equity imposed some sort of equilibrium, because the fear of getting caught imposed some restrictions.
Not an economist - though I have an economics degree.

Markets need rules to function properly, for them to “clear”, which is a crude way of saying approach equilibrium. What equilibrium is being approached here? There is, as a practical matter, an unlimited amount of cash available so there’s no possibility of markets functioning correctly in the current situation, which is not a unique situation to college football, but is demonstrated across our dysfunctional economy.
This isn’t “free enterprise.” Markets are supposed to clear. What is happening here is that prices are being bid up because the system is flush with cash. Unrestricted free agency means players just move on to the next highest bidder whenever they want. There is no approach to equilibrium, the price just keeps going up and up and up.

This situation is not unique to college athletics. This is the asset bubble we see in real estate, private equity and the price inflation in commodities. Anyone who thinks we’ve seen free enterprise in America the last decade and a half is mistaken.

Locksley might be the sleeper no one is talking about.
They were dogshit in the 70’s when LSU scheduled them for like a 10 game series, almost all of them in Baton Rouge. I think LSU won only one or two of those games.

Should never schedule them. If they get matched up in a bowl game, different story.
LSU should can the person who thought it was a good idea to schedule Florida State to start the season two years in a row. Just look at the series history - Florida State owns LSU.
Roster has a ton of issues and simply hiring Aranda back doesn’t address those.
I can’t remember the names of that cute couple, but they had them on here for years.
I’ve not seen this potential format trial-ballooned so I’ll give it a shot. Start the year with 3 non conference games; 4 conference games mixed in with a bye; 3 conference games with a random pool draw; last two weeks of November are first two rounds of playoff; SEC Championship first week of December; whoever is not a part of the playoff gets to play consolation games the last two weeks of the season.

Who gets in? Four teams who win their pool, plus first four teams in winning %.

F*** your rivalries - this format would be far better tv than the Iron Bowl or Michigan-Ohio State.
Site selection has as much to do with the amount of available hotel rooms in the area as the size of the arena.
In the SEC, only head coaches who have won their division within the first three years have gone on to win a conference title. The exceptions: Fulmer and Orgeron.
Two (rotating) pods play each other each year round robin to determine the two representatives in the championship

Rice Game in Houston Time

Set for 2:30 pm. Television network TBA - though probably CBS Sports Network or NFL Network. LINK
I’m not cheering for them or against them. However, if they win this game, they will set themselves up to be contenders next season. If they lose this game, they need to STFU. I don’t want to hear from them the entire offseason. This bowl game is a “prove-it” game for Kirby and Georgia.

Last year, they didn’t take Texas seriously, and they didn’t get to the playoffs. LSU took their bowl game seriously, beat a good UCF team, and is now in the championship. If they lose to Baylor, they need to just shut the hell up with their trash talk and should not be taken seriously as a championship contender.
Doesn’t matter - see Oklahoma and Texas

Ohio State gave away the game vs Clemson

1. Kicking field goals instead of scoring touchdowns.

2. Lost the turnover battle 0-2.

LSU will score TD’s and win the turnover margin vs Clemson.
CBS has usually had very good production, but go back and watch the Georgia game from 2018. It was horrible. Seems like they had four cameras for the entire game. Don’t know if they had equipment trouble or what, but seems like they didn’t have a good angle on nearly every play with some controversy.

After that, and because of all the commercials, I was ready for the SEC to cut and run.

We want Clemson

And if a number 1 Ohio State has to play a dirty Utah team, even better. Dirty Utah will not beat Ohio State, but will beat them up enough they’ll still feel it in the National Championship.
