Opelousas now has a Devery Henderson St.
Posted by Bayou Bengal 72 on 2/15/10 at 9:48 am
The Opelousas city council voted Tuesday to rename Jefferson Street for Opelousas native and former LSU and current Saints' wide receiver Devery Henderson.
The street is 17 blocks long.

re: Does Tiger Band march in NOLA parades?

Over the years (thru 1997 my last Mardi Gras before moving from N.O.) the LSU Band has marched in Bacchus several times usually in front of or behind the King's float. And I do remember the Tiger Band in Rex at least once.

Fletch tries too hard to be funny which he really isn't. Ben and JJ Marshall were at least naturally funny and played off of each other pretty well. They weren't LSU shills and would give props to LSU reluctantly when they did well.
I hope they land another slot somewhere on the Shareveport dial.

And Bama fans are trying to say that Jones touched the ball while he was out of bounds, thereby making PP out of bounds? Jones' hand is inches away from the ball when PP snags it. It's not even close.
They are basing this on a rule that says if a ball touches anything out-of-bounds (OoB) it is OoB also. But that rule is about a ball not in possession of a player. The rule for a Pass is that it is a live ball until whistled dead by an official.

There are people in Shreveport that would actually prefer to watch the Cowboys over the Saints? Is there anyone in Shreveport not from Louisiana, and if so, why?
Unfortunatly there are a lot of Cowboy fans in S'port. Many from the era when the Saints were 'aints and the Cowboys were good. Then there are the Texan's (from East Texas which is just a few miles away) that watch TV on the Shreveport stations (since Dallas is over 180 miles away.
But the Saints won the last election a couple of weeks ago. This past week there was no conflict!
ANd KMSS can't show both games even if technically feasible in this new digital TV age.

The Sugar Bowl would most probably take the higher ranked SEC team. But there is a section in the BCS Selection procedure that allows two BCS bowls to trade if a team will go to the same bowl for a second year in a row. And if Florida plays Texas in the BCSCG then the Sugar will select 1st followed by the Fiesta Bowl. They can choose any BCS Auto Qualifier or At-Large team (not tied to another bowl). This will not help LSU because unless the Sugar chooses LSU or another BCS bowl does BEFORE another BCS bowl selects Alabama, we're shut out because of the one conference/two-team rule.

Actually, the Grantland Rice Bowl wasn't in Tiger Stadium but in some smaller stadium in Baton Rouge and I don't believe it was Southern's Stadium either. It was over 35 years ago so I can't remember the name but it was most definitely not Tiger Stadium.

The Sugar Bowl is a New Orleans institution founded in 1934 but the idea had been promoted since 1927, before the SEC was founded. And in the 1970's when the SEC Champion kept getting shut out of three of the four major New Year's Day bowls (Rose, Orange, Sugar and Cotton) because those bowls wanted a lighter weight opponent for their champions (usually not an SEC team) the Sugar Bowl was the bowl that the SEC decided to tie up with. It was Bear Bryant who helped sell the idea because he said it was the best thing to do for the conference even if it wasn't the best for his team (to be tied down). But it has worked out fine for the SEC and the Sugar Bowl even though the SEC champs have played in more BCSCG's than any other conference and kept the Sugar Bowl from having the SEC champ in most of those years.
And the Superdome has literally been rebuilt from the top down to the floor. It was basically brand new in the fall of 2006 so it's, what, three years old now. The Superdome is still the largest free standing domed structure in the world and the best stadium built in the 1970's and the most versatile. It has hosted Super Bowls, Sugar Bowls, Final Fours, an NFL team , a NBA team, an NCAA team, baseball, the Republican Convention, the Rolling Stones, Pope John Paul II, the biggest annual Mardi Gras post-parade party, motocross, monster trucks, etc.
The Superdome under construction in 1974.

re: What was your first game to attend?
Posted by Bayou Bengal 72 on 10/16/09 at 2:34 pm
My first game was against Texas A&M back in either 1961 or 62 when my whole family went from New Orleans. Then on New Years Day 1965, I was serving mass and as it ended the priest turned to me and the other altar boy and said pick a number between 1 and 4, so I said 4 and then he told the other guy, don't bother picking, he just picked the number and Father offered me his Sugar Bowl ticket. I said yes and my mom and dad drove me up to Tulane Stadium and I had 45 yard line seats for LSU vs Syracuse. The Tigers won on Doug Moreau's FG. It was a gorgeous winter afternoon sunny and cold.
Then in 1968, I enrolled at LSU and my first game was against Texas A&M and we won 13-12. That season we lost at Miami (on a Friday night), and to Ole' Miss in the last minute (to some flashy sophmore QB named Archie) and at Alabama.
And I almost forgot, we went to a brand new bowl game in Atlanta, The Peach Bowl and the Tigers beat Bill Peterson's Florida State team 31 to 27.

re: Who was LSU's last "freak" (athlete)?
Posted by Bayou Bengal 72 on 8/10/09 at 1:29 pm
I was a kid when Billy Cannon was a Tiger but I remember a quote that described him as "either the strongest sprinter or the fastest shot putter" they had ever seen.
I would name mid-1930's LSU football player and track star Jack Torrance who held the shot put world record for almost fourteen years as LSU's original FREAK athlete. He set the world record (16.80 meters) in 1934, only three days after the previous record had been set. He raised it twice more that year.
Torrance was one of the five athletes that made up LSU's 1933 NCAA Championship Track & Field team, coached by Bernie Moore He also won the shot put again in 1934 with that first world record. Torrance was on the 1936 U.S. Olympic Team that went to Berlin but he never equaled his personal best and didn't medal but his world record wasn't broken until 1948.

A lot of posters on other boards call Les stupid. But I think Les is smart, balanced and tough. He did what was necessary when he dropped the only experienced QB he had. He and the team paid for it all last season but I can't fault him for the decision. I'm glad he's our coach and hope he is for a long time to come.
re: Dennis Dodd's decade rankings 1-10

So Cal has 1 BCS Championship, 1 BCS LOSS and 1 Consolation Prize NC.
Oklahoma has 1 BCS Championship and 2 BCSCG losses
Texas has 1 BCS Championship and no other attempts
LSU and Florida each have 2 BCS Championships in 2 tries.
With our disappointing season last year (Thanks, Ryan!) I would rank this decade (through 2008) as
1. Florida
2. LSU
3. USC
4. Oklahoma
5. Texas
6. Ohio State

re: Tulane fans reminiscing about a win over LSU 35 years ago...
Posted by Bayou Bengal 72 on 1/29/09 at 3:21 pm
I was at that game, my first LSU-TU game since graduating from LSU in Dec 1972. The TU fans were very obnoxious about the win.
And the little TU sh*ts comment about the "only LSU bumper stickers uptown were on pool cleaners and gardeners" is so typical of the attitude of the N.O. Tulane fan. What he didn't realize was that the LSU Alumni had an outpost on the most exclusive street in Uptown New Orleans, Audubon Place - where the Tulane president resides. Alumni meetings were held at that home from which two of the sons had been LSU Cheerleaders while I weas in B.R.
What they aren't saying is that the win was one of only four that TU has over LSU in the last 58 years (1949 to 2008) - my lifetime plus one year. Tulane quit the SEC in 1962 because they weren't competitive. They have only rarely been competitive since.
Tulane fans have to live in the past because they haven't got anything in the present or even the recent past to cheer about.
