Unfortunately, NCAA is not like the NFL. There is no playoff in college football.
You're not making apples-to-apples comparison. You're trying to sell your position.

It's just hard to understand how a team with a lot of potential, but no resume' or division title or conferenct title, to show for it can receive so much hype.
You have an "ok" Offense, very good Defense, and average Special Teams.
Does that really = BCSCCG.
Team is not one or two good units. It's all aspects of the game and LSU is hands down the most complete "Team" in the country this year.
Bama Grades out:
(B-) Offense
(A+) Defense
(C) Special Teams
(B-) Coaching
(C-) Schedule

recruiting is also why a team like Texas normally wins 10 games a year pretty much all the time.
Talent and playing in a weak conference contributes heavily to 10 wins in their case.

most of the time the best players have a higher star rating.
I'll respectfully disagree. There's a higher number of lower-rated recruits (by recruiting services. not the coaches) playing in the NFL than those that were rated 5*. That's been researched an proven. GB and Pitt's rosters have a number of these guys.
I agree that talent on the roster is important.
Where we disagree is who determines the value of that talent when a program chooses to recruit a prospect.
Example: Coaches have already started accepting commitments from 2012 while recruiting services are still chasing Cyrus and Clowney of 2011. You know why? because your are PAYING for a Subscription and want Cyrus and Clowney information. Recruiting services have not created their top 250/100/200/300 lists for 2012. Have coaches waited for those lists prior to making offers and accepting commitments?

Then Rivals will just give them all high ratings because they were founded by a Bama fan
Lol. You're a wizard. So your fans find your recruits?
Even more reason to trust the services more than Saban's years of experience and knowledge of the game.
Were you placing as much value on stars when DuBose, Fran, Price (oops), and Shula were leading your program? It seems that the fanbases that hype stars up the most are those that are doing pretty well at it. Interesting huh? Get excited about it. As a fan, have fun with it, but don't swear by it, young man. It's projections and opinions of guys like you that may have never seen a locker room. These guys must be developed, coached up, and then execute between the lines. Refer back to your Sugar Bowl game against Utah. You can't just come in to the stadium and say "We Win because Rivals/Scout/ESPN say we have much more talent than you".
Are you serious?
[I'm glad that LSU does well at recruiting, but we've had to do some staff overhauling the last 3 years to try to get our guys better prepared to exhaust their potential. Staff was replaced because of development & execution. Not stars!]

Yes, there are exceptions, but if you give me a team full of 5 stars I will beat a team full of 3 stars 8 out of 10 times.
Boise only needed one matchup against OU to win the Fiesta; Utah only needed one matchup against Bama to win the Sugar; TCU only needed one win over Wisconsin to take the Rose. When do these teams play again? Don't think they'll see 10 matchups. So take your overall series record while they take the title.
Where does coaching come into play?
Do you think that your coaches place stars on their prospects? Really?
So you trust the services and guys that may have never played the sport moreso than your HC and his staffs' 60+ years of hands-on experience and knowledge of the game?

... and each of those recruiting services has a different #1 ranked school. IMO, just mine alone, the services are a bit pageantry-oriented and possibly biased at times.
The coaches and their staffs know their needs better than an outside entity which would cause them to value a Rivals 3*as a 5* to their program. I'm sure coaches use some of the recruiting services info to keep up with the happenings in recruiting, but they use camps and attend games to do their recon. The recruiting services are cute and fun for the prospects and fans, but I think its another way to make $$$ more than anything. It sells college football.
Utah, Boise, and TCU have many Rivals/ESPN/Scout 3* recruits. Guess what big time programs they've beaten in recent years that are consistently loaded with 4* & 5* players?

Right now JJ is a 2nd round pick at best. I think he's holding out for 1st round money.
Make your jokes about JJ, but I doubt that all you want at QB next year is Mettenberger and Lee.
Many make fun of Miles, but when it appeared he may be gone, they were concerned.
JJ may not be what you'd wish for and, but you'd miss him if he left or suffered an injury next season. You can't have one capable QB on the depth chart and make a championship run. Mauck and Flynn can attest to that.
