Donovan was a head coach at Marshall for 2 seasons before Florida came calling. Sure...he had been an assistant at Kentucky (which is really why Florida came after him)...but he had significantly less experience as a Head Coach than Caldwell. Is it a gamble? Sure...but similar gambles have paid off for others in the past.
