re: Non-Pels NBA January Thread

What i find really irritating about the sport is how it's officiated in general.

The last 2 minute report came out for eht Boston/Indy game and said that the Pacers should not have been shooting FT's to win the game, that Porzingis didn't foul Mathurin. ANd also said that Hield didn't foul Jaylen Brown the play before, a play that was originally called a foul and overturned.

Both plays are clear fouls to me.
Hield Foul on Brown
quote:

The NBA's report deemed the decision to overturn the call on the floor correct, stating that Buddy Hield made "minimal contact" with Brown's head.

minimal contact with the head? so b/c it was minimal contact it was ok? You can't touch someones head while they are shooting. period. just like you can't touch someones arm while they are shooting, no matter how minimal. It will 100% affect the shot.

The fact that it was overturned to not a foul, and then the L2M report confrims it wasn't a foul makes me feel like i'm taking crazy pills. I'm all for aggressive play and earning your bucket at the end of games, but that's a foul. It's a very weak foul, but it's a foul.

AND ON TOP OF THE FOUL, IT WAS A FRICKING TRAVEL!!!!!

Porzingis foul on Mathurin

quote:

The report states that Porzingis was above the ball and legally contested the shot, "with some incidental arm contact occurring concurrent with the block." Officials reviewed whether the call was made before the clock expired, but the foul itself was not reviewable.

incidental arm contact? well then it's a foul.
On top of the fact that he's in his face and doesn't provide him any room to land on his jump shot as he bumps his legs as well. It's a clear foul.

The NBA thinks niether of those plays are fouls.
Cool stat.
even cooler stat.......

Luka Playoff 35+ point games, his team is 4-8
Luka Playoff 45+ point games, his team is 0-2

Dirk Playoff 35+ point games, his team is 11-4
Dirk Playoff 45+ point games, his teams is 3-0

re: Marvel’s Echo has dropped

Posted by MrBarry on 1/10/24 at 10:37 am
I know they are wanting people to want to see this Echo girl, but the only reason the vast majority of people will give it a shot is b/c of Daredevil and Kingpin.

That being said, you'll get the viewers b/c of those two guys, and if you write a good story and create a good character in Echo, then you succeeded.

But i saw the trailer for it on tv the other day and it was that same terrible fight scene that was shot awfully, and it's going to be hard for me to spend my time watching something that put something that crappy in their trailer.

Just understand that the vast majority of credible, reliable meteorologists don’t make these forecasts with the goal of disrupting our lives. They’re just trying to do their jobs.

I am more than aware of that, which is why I simply asked that we don't make cancellation decisions earlier than necessary, which seemed to be very difficult for 99.9% of the people here to actually comprehend. The weather can change for better or worst quickly.
At no point did i say do'nt cancel it. I simply said to wait until the weather forecast is clearer and more accurate, and if it's bad enough, which it was on Monday evening, then you cancel stuff.

and did you see my schedule? you think i'm that upset about not having practice one night? we got to actually cook and eat supper together as a family at a decent time, which was wonderful, and i didn't die in a ditch on my way to Rouses that evening picking up food to cook that evening, but thanks for the well wishes of death.

Huh? JV with Carter as his backup is not something you would entertain?

Sure, if we still had Larry, or a similar type backup 5 that can defend in a similar way Larry can.

That's great to have if we are playing the Nuggets.
Against every other team in the West, how are we supposed to defend the high pick? we are just going to play drop coverage the entire game? Are we going to switch onto Steph Curry and Harden and let them eat us alive?

The reason Larry works so well is b/c he can switch onto other guys and still defend well enough, and also b/c he's able to hedge the pick a bit and recover to his man quicker.
JV and Carter aren't capable of playing any other coverage other than drop coverage, and neither one of them are Rudy Gobert or Walker Kessler.

I did not start it silly goose.

you guys are so hostile in here. So much name calling.

relax, take a chill pill, and have a great day.

Read an article by Shamit I think that suggested Carter,

Is he really an upgrade over JV?

quote:

Carter’s issues have never been on the offensive end of the floor. But, he is at the forefront of one of Orlando’s biggest deficiencies which is protecting the rim and contesting shots around the basket.

Wendell Carter is already a good offensive center. He is a double-double machine with a sneaky three-pointer. But, his defense keeps him from becoming great. If it gets improved, it will not only help himself but also the Orlando Magic.
As a team, the Magic ranked 15th in team defense as they were in the middle of the road in the majority of stat categories. Orlando ranked sixth in the league giving up 47.6 points in the paint per game. Teams found it difficult to get to the basket against them.
But when they did, they were able to score. According to data from Second Spectrum, the Magic gave up 68.4 percent shooting at the rim, the fourth-worst mark in the league.

Carter despite some solid defensive statistics, struggled in this area too. The centers on the team in general need to become more of an anchor with this issue and Carter’s defense is a start that will not only benefit him but also his team.

Carter did get a good portion of blocks amongst the Magic players (he had 21.2 percent of all of Orlando’s blocks). Keep in mind, that this was also on a team that was average in the block department with blocks per game (15th overall in the league).

The spot on defense where Carter seemingly is exposed is the points in the paint he allows. In each game during the 2023 season, he gave up an average of 29.6 points in the paint to opponents per game. This is the highest mark he has given up in a season so far in his NBA career.

I'm not even going to entertain the idea of Wendell Carter Jr and JV playing together, or the two of them being our only guys on the roster that can play the 5.

It doesn't take a 1st to dump an expiring 5.7m. Most of the contract will have already been paid by the pels. It'll just take a 2nd and some cash

Here are our second round picks we own.

2024 - which is going to be 50 or worst, so rather worthless
2030

I'm ok dumping a protected first if we get back a decent backup player, and then 2-3 second round picks, or a high 2nd round pick.

Detroit is sending their 2nd to Toronto, but they own Washington or Memphis' 2nd, whichever one is better.

Kira and lottery protected 24 1st for Isiah Livers and that Washington/Memphis 2nd and their 2025 2nd.

Can do the same with Toronto, as they are going to be shipping Siakam out. Get in that deal and bring back Koloko, send Toronto the 2024 1st and Kira and get back Detroits 2024 2nd.

What an awesome rant.

Dallas is not good.
They play zero defense, same as Sacramento, and it’s why both of those teams will be easy to pass and stay ahead in the standings over time.
I don’t think either team wants picks from us.
They’d probably be more interested in us getting a better player for them using Hawkins and the two firsts.

And we can send 24 protected 1st with Kira to the Nets for Sharpe, and get back their 2nd this year and 2 more future 2nds.
And a straight up Kira for Sharpe salary wise puts us around $500k under the tax. Add EJ to it and sign Matt Ryan.
quote:

If Val left, they would have to replace him. Nance is not suddenly your starting 5 regardless.

correct.

We'll have over $130M in CJ/BI/Zion/Larry/Herb next year, so we won't be able to sign anyone.

I would imagine if the team wanted JV next year, they would have already offered him an extension, but we haven't done that.
The fact that we haven't done that would tell me that we do need to look for our next 5 right now possibly, whether or not that means JV is traded away.

A simple move of Kira/EJ for Day'Ron Sharpe makes sense, and gets us under the tax.
quote:

Getting Williams or Kessler would be fantastic since they can act as a rotation piece now and core player in the future, but I don't believe they are attainable without a crazy overpay.

what do you deem an overpay?
Hawkins, 24 lottery protected 1st, and the worst of the Lakers/Pels 25 1st?
I would say that's an overpay, but it's probably what it takes.

I'm interested in finding a defensive center who will make a big impact to the team.

let's look at NetRtg for centers this year that get more than 15mpg
Embiid 13.0
Porzingis 12.5
Jokic 12.3
Chet 9.2
Zubac 9.2
Gobert 9.0
Duop Reath 9.0 (impressive considering he is the only player on the Blazers with a + Net Rating, and he's on a two way, and he's shooting 37% from 3 taking 3.7 a game)
Horford 8.5
Hartenstein 8.2
Day'Ron Sharpe 7.7
Goga 7.3
Nurkik 7.1
Myles Turner 6.9
Lively 6.3
KAT 6.2
JV 6.0
Mitchell Robinson 2.9
Jarrett Allen 2.6
Kessler 1.6
Nance 0.2
Bam -.3
Sabonis -1.0
Poeltl -1.0
Mark Williams -1.2
Olynyk -2.6
Capela -2.8
Wendell Carter Jr. -3.0
JJJ -5.0
Claxton -6.5
Gafford -9.0

The outlier to me here is Bam and Sabonis. We know he's good, and his team is good. Net Rating is going to be heavily influenced by wins and losses, and margin of victory.

What tells a better story is on/off net rating differential. + means they are that much better with that player on the court, - means they are that much worse with them on the court.
Embiid +9.7
Porzingis +4.1
Jokic +21.0
Chet +3.1
Zubac +9.1
Gobert +10.0
Duop Reath +20.5
Horford -3.6
Hartenstein +10.2
Day'Ron Sharpe +13.5
Goga +8.3
Nurkik +13.6
Myles Turner +9.3
Lively +7.1
KAT +1.7
JV +3.0
Mitchell Robinson -0.5
Jarrett Allen +0.6
Kessler +8.1
Nance -5.3
Bam -5.6
Sabonis -3.2
Poeltl +0.6
Mark Williams +13.2
Olynyk +0.9
Capela -2.8
Wendell Carter Jr. -3.0
JJJ +1.4
Claxton -8.9
Gafford +2.3

What's even more suprising here is Bam and Sabonis are both negatives here yet again, which would lead you to believe they are both playing well below what is expected of them.
Bam is at 57.7 TS%, where as he's average 60.7 the last 5 years, but we still know he's a great player.
$20M/yr guys Jarrett Allen and Capella don't seem to be impacting their team that well.

quote:

I’m arguing that trading Nance is minimal and the most helpful/ leaves us with the smallest hole to fill.

So you want us to trade away a guy for no reason, and then try to fill the hole he left next year in free agency while we will once again be a team up against the tax?

Do you hear yourself?
Did Larry sleep with your girl or something? You seem to have a large disdain for him for some reason.

I have no problem trading Larry. I understand what he means to the team on the court and off, but his injury history gets on my nerves.
He is such a good player for us when healthy though.

quote:

“No Nance isn’t a 4, he’s an aging undersized 5 with injury history”

He's a backup 5.
You are wanting to trade one backup 5, who we know when healthy is really good for us, for another backup 5 who's an expiring contract.
What's the point of that?
quote:

Larry is a 4/5

No he is not.
Larry plays the 5 for us. He's shared the court with JV for a grand total of 10 minutes this year, meaning he's played the 4 for 10 minutes in 15 games.

Last year they shared the court for 70 minutes, in 50 games together.

They have averaged basically 1 minute per game together.
Larry has played the 4 for us for 4% of the total minutes he's played for us.

Stop saying Larry is a backup 4 for us.

quote:

We need a backup 4

I agree.

quote:

replacing Larry Nance with Olynyk for a few playoffs series giving Trey Murphy more playing time doesn’t hurt us in my opinion.

Why do you keep saying Larry Nance is preventing Trey from playing more? Larry plays the 5. Trey plays the 4 and the 3.
The guys taking minutes from Trey right now are Herb and Dyson, who are playing 52 minutes a night combined. I'm sorry, i mean the guy taking minutes away from Trey is Willie for some dumb reason.
Herb and Dyson are averaging 10 minutes played together a game, which is ridiculous. We have a net rating of 1.5 when they share the court.
Pels get Mark Williams and Dean Wade

Cavs get Hawkins, JV, Bouknight(worthless)

Hornets get Jarrett Allen
quote:

JV is an expirer as of now and Nance will be an expirer next season.

that's why i say to go after a big on a rookie deal that looks like someone who can take JV's place next year.
Walker Kessler or Mark Williams. Both of these guys have shown they are huge impacts defensively on their crappy teams.

We talk about going into the tax to get better. I say use these 1sts we have to get better. The draft is a crapshoot, and while we have drafted well lately, we are due for a dud. Spending a pick or two on more of a sure thing is the route i think we should be looking at right now. We need a young 5, and we can't wait 2-3 years for them to be a contributor, or to see if they even can be a contributor. We have 3 picks in the next two years. Trade two of them if necessary.
