re: Does anyone here use Ebay anymore?
Posted by iggle on 4/29/15 at 2:51 pm
Few things to note. eBay owns PayPal that owns venmo. eBay also owns stubhub and own 25% of craigslist. They are splitting with PayPal though so you'll probably see more payment options after, like apple pay or even Bitcoin, for those that don't like PayPal.

I would say why c# too, I don't know anyone doing it and don't see much buzz for .net devs. It's 2015, have him learn ruby or Python, javascript (and then coffee script) or maybe Java as most large tech companies will always use it. Try swift too. He'll get a better idea of what he likes and the sooner he finds it the better. Also he should find out what he wants to do, native apps, web apps, front end, back end, etc. try it all.
re: The Dallas Ebola patient has died
Posted by iggle on 10/8/14 at 12:30 pm
The monkeys were observed to get sick from each other from across the room, in cages. So yes, with Ebola RESTON, it COULD be airborne. But, this is not Ebola Reston, it's a different kind.
It travels through fluids. And the virus is easily caught, but difficult to spread. It's difficult to spread because of the incubation period and being able to isolate people right away that have been in contact, before they have symptoms.
BUT, it is VERY easy to catch. Have you wondered why they wear full body suits with air filters? I think sometimes they are even positively pressured so nothing can get in. Patients with it are bleeding, vomiting blood, etc. One little microscopic speck that gets on your eye, or lips, or whatever can get in you and it could be game over after that. It takes a very little number of individual ebola viruses to get infected. When biosafety level for HIV is a 2 and Ebola is a 4, the highest.
If it were me, I wouldn't go in there with a single piece of skin showing, full body suit.

re: 13 Unbeliveably Cruel Torture Devices Throughout History
Posted by iggle on 9/19/14 at 10:43 am
iron maiden is BS. No evidence it was ever used and only got famous because of one specimen that was in a museum, at a time when a lot of torture devices were made up to get the crowds in, ala PT Barnum and his sideshows.
LINK )
for this reason, I have trouble believing a lot of torture devices and their true authenticity.
quote:
The iron maiden is often associated with the Middle Ages.[1] However, no account has been found earlier than 1793, although medieval torture devices were catalogued and reproduced during the 19th century.
Wolfgang Schild, a professor of criminal law, criminal law history, and philosophy of law at the University of Bielefeld, has argued that supposed iron maidens were pieced together from artifacts found in museums to create spectacular objects intended for (commercial) exhibition.[2]

If we're counting color of money, then The Hustler is definitely in the top 10
re: Poison Ivy Contagious Period

it's only contagious until you wash the oil from the plant off. Once you've washed it off, it's not contagious, you just have to wait for your skins allergic reaction to subside.
But be careful of any clothing or other stuff that may have touched the plant, if there is still oil on them, you can get it again. Be sure to clean them too.

more info since I visited there. He's on all the money, like every denomination, his picture is in every home and place of business. He also latinized Turkey's alphabet, it used to be more like symbols of Arabic. He is credited with basically modernizing the country and making it what it is today, a secular first world country. Most people think it is third world for some reason too.

they have like a 99.7% chance of advancing...
I think both teams play very defensively and timid, knowing just a tie gets them both through. I say it ends in 0-0 or 1-1 tie.
The Portugal-Ghana game is more likely to be high scoring since both teams need lots of goals. But I think Portugal comes away with the win. They need something to salvage from this world cup and are playing for just that.

yeah, I say suck it up and do some awesome cold weather sports. Snowboard/ski, hike up on a glacier with a guide, swimming in hot springs.
Either that or something in the desert. The Moab idea sounds cool, or maybe Grand Canyon. Do white water rafting, hiking, sky diving would be incredible there.

re: Yellow Cab manager "Uber service would threaten cab companies, passenger safety"
Posted by iggle on 6/6/14 at 3:34 pm
I live in nyc and have used uber quite a bit. Some points for people that want to know more:
- uber gets background checks, all personal info of drivers
- if drivers get too many bad reviews, they're dropped from uber
- no cash ever needed. It's billed to the credit card on your account. The driver turns on the meter from the app on HIS phone (provided by uber).
- as others have pointed out, you can view all uber cars nearby, and where your car is when it's on its way
- you may have heard about price gouging. This happens because uber guarantees that you can get a car with its service. So when demand is high, rates go up to keep the service available. Conversely, when demand is really low, rates go down quite a bit. This is probably only a problem for big cities. NYC had a big price gouging problem with uber after Sandy.
- You can easily get uber credits by getting friends to sign up. We've gotten over $100 so far in free rides.
- haven't had to use it yet, but heard the customer service is outstanding
- all cars I've been in have been new looking and very clean, all driver's nice as well.
- most driver's have been gypsy cab or yellow cab drivers for years and years. They're not just some stranger trying it out. They can do this on their own with their own cars and get paid more than with cab companies.

trivia alert: the man who designed the font the USMNT uses now, including jersey numbers (font is called United btw) graduated from LSU.

This one really is more mind blowing than the one in the OP, which he gives no source for and after a quick googling, I can't find anything to support it either.

- There are as many odd numbers as there are even and odd put together.
this one is deceiving. I assume this is using an infinite series? It's like the fact that if you added up all positive numbers together, the answer is -1/12. Yes, it's negative one twelfth.
Now, while mathematically true, it doesn't mean you can add up all numbers and get that because you can't add up all numbers, they're infinite.
Same with that series, it's a misleading way of phrasing it using a mathematical proof of an infinite series.
re: How would you handle this situation? re: Initial Job Interview and Salary
Posted by iggle on 4/30/14 at 4:02 pm
they are being upfront about salary though.
Say you go through interviewing, they love you, offer you the job, you ask for 20% more and they are gonna be "WTF!? We laid out our range for you in the very beginning." They may be upset you wasted their time when you could have known they couldn't afford you.
If you are really in love with this company and still interested then for sure interview, if not, why not keep looking? There are tons of jobs. Even if they were to match your current salary by bumping up a whopping 20%, I wouldn't leave jobs unless I was getting a sizable raise, not a lateral move.
To each his own though.

I work near times square. I went to get lunch today with my sister at Shake Shack. The cashier noticed my sis' saints credit card and asked if she was a fan. Said Drew Brees was in there earlier and he served him. Probably missed him by less than an hour

map is pretty dumb. It only gives those 6 choices. I'd be much more interested in what the most popular liquor is overall in each country.
I know for a fact in Turkey it is Raki. To say vodka is their liquor of choice is dumb.

I think you missed some points. Here's how I understand it.
-crop report fake, says winter had big effect on crops
-dukes start buying frenzy trying to corner the market, know they price will skyrocket when the report is released (so they think)
-valentine and winthorpe sell futures (that they don't have btw, you can do that). They sell a ton and the price goes way up and they rake it in.
-real report is released and price plummets. Now they have to BUY because they don't actually own any contracts to sell in the first place. So they buy back every future they sold and net the difference... which is huge.
So they walk away with a boatload of cash and didn't actually have to any physical product, nothing actually changed hands, which I find amazing. Money has only the value we assign it and the value they had was fabricated and made in 20 minutes haha.

were you near the aisle (closer to 333)? I saw a group of saints fans there since I was in row 21 right above.
Was a fun game, even if frustrating at times. Loved the who dat chant after the touchdowns.
had a good size turnout of saints fans though, saw them all over.
