Kind of. The word “Jew” enters the Bible pretty late. These people were first Hebrews, then Israelites, then Jews. Jews are a small percentage of what remains of the Israelites (only the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi).

This is probably the best explanation. I would say “ethnicity” rather than “race” though.
You can be a Jew and not religious. You can be a Gentile (non-Jew) who practices Judaism.
If your mother is an ethnic Jew, that qualifies you as being a Jew regardless of how you live your life. If you are a Jew who worships Jesus, you are a “Messianic Jew.”
