I grew up just outside of Columbia and seeing the video of this attack made my blood boil. Thankfully, the attacker (a 16-year old belonging to a "nationally-affiliated gang") and another man were arrested for the attack.

Local News Article about the Arrests (WISTV)

quote:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Richland County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of 21-year-old Trechaun Belton and a 16-year-old teenager in connection with an attack during a protest in May that injured a man.

After receiving tips from the community, officials said Belton and the 16-year-old were both arrested on Tuesday. Belton was arrested in Orangeburg and the 16-year-old was arrested in Greenville.

Officials said the 16-year-old, who was not identified because he is under the age of 18, is a member of a nationally-affiliated gang in Orangeburg.

According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, both Belton and the teenager have been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, instigating a riot, and aggravated breach of peace.

Yep, NPR is talking in detail about the report and what to expect right now. Word must be out that it's a win for the democrats.
Sure did. At the time it was the nicest, newest dorm on campus. I knew several people that got into the Honors College just to stay there freshman year and then dropped out when they moved off campus.

No idea if that's what Meghan did or not, but either way she wasn't there for long. Either way it's good to see a young USC grad doing big things.
Wow haha she lived on my hall freshman year at USC. Very nice, but her and her roommate (also a cheerleader) ended up moving to a different dorm second semester. I guess the Honors College dorm was too lame for them.

Awesome to see her getting recognized, USC needs some good press at the moment.

I started drinking right after work and planned on going to bed whenever Trump lost one of the swing states like Florida, NC, or Ohio. Figuring it would be an early night, I was already pretty hammered by the time polls started closing at 7pm. And I didn't stop as Trump kept picking up state after state. By the time it was clear that he was going to win I was drunk as hell and celebrated for an hour or two before passing out just before he gave his victory speech.

What a great night, cant wait to do it again next year

Like the other USC posters have said, Thirsty Fellow is the place to go before baseball games. It's also close to the gameday shuttle parking lot, which is a plus if you would like to save a few dollars by not parking at the stadium.
Not a hunting story, but a fishing story about my grandpa. I've never posted on this board but this topic got me. I'll apologize in advance because this is a little long.

Fishing was always our favorite thing to do together for as long as I can remember. He taught me how to cast a bait-cast, took me out of school to play hooky several times a year, and we would go to Bassmaster University every year to celebrate our birthdays that were only 4 days apart. Obviously as I got older girls, sports, and other things occupied most of my time and I didn't make as much time to go fishing with him through high school and college.

Then at Christmas 3 years ago he was really sick and he couldn't shake it for months. By April we found out that he had stage 4 liver cancer and was given 6 months to live. Before he started chemo we went fishing twice and tore it up. We got into a school of largemouths and he even caught two bass on one crankbait. It was an absolute blast and I was sure that was our last time fishing together.

He had a truly terrible experience with chemo and it took months for the doctors to come up with a combination that would allow him to keep food down. But he's one of the toughest men I've ever known and he kept telling me that we would get out on the boat and go fishing again.

Sure enough we did. I remember it was a perfectly clear July morning and I helped him into the boat since he had lost nearly half his body weight. We rode up the lake to our favorite spot, and I could tell that he was struggling physically. Neither of us got a bite and we weren't able to stay long because his medication made him extremely sensitive to the sun, but on the way back to the dock I told him that I loved him and some of the best moments of my life were in the boat fishing with him.

He passed away less than 2 months later and my grandma told me that some of his last words were that he just wanted to go fishing with me again. We didn't get any fish into the boat that last time, but it is without a doubt my most memorable fishing trip with my grandpa.

Works with the Football team as the Director of Player Development LINK

So far he has organized etiquette and personal finance classes for the players, taken them to a prison to show them how their lives can end up if they make wrong decisions, preached the mantra "Use athletics. Do not let athletics use you.", etc.

His goal is to prepare the student athletes for life after football, whenever that might occur.

I agree 100%. If you talk to Tech fans about what is holding back the athletic program, at least 9 out of 10 will say the academic administration. Almost everyone agrees that more emphasis can be put on academics without sacrificing the "prestige" of a GT degree, like adding majors that don't require 2 calculus classes and 2 physics classes and courses that are more appealing to elite athletes.

GT fan here, and I'll try to explain some of the factors that hold Tech back. Just a warning, this is going to be long:

1. GT Academics - One of the biggest gripes of Tech fans is that the academic rigors are too much for most of the athletes that go to SEC schools. Whereas most other schools have programs like Sport & Entertainment Management, Sociology, etc., the "jock major" at Tech is Business Administration, which is still a top 30 program in the country. Also, every major at GT requires 2 physics classes and 2 calculus classes. That's a hard sell for most elite athletes that just want to play football for 3 years and move on to the NFL.

2. Triple Option Offense - Like I stated in the first point, GT has a significant disadvantage when it comes to recruiting, especially in Georgia. The result is that Tech usually takes good athletes that lack the size to play at SEC schools. Since the players are usually on the smaller, quicker side, the TO is a great way to make up for the talent gap against superior teams. Yes, Tech tend to struggle mightily against good D-lines, but who doesn't? And don't forget that Tech actually beat UGA in Athens in 2016 and it 2-2 over the past 4 years. The offense is uncommon and unique, and I think it actually fits GT perfectly even if it's harder to recruit blue-chip players.

3. Atlanta - UGA, Auburn, Clemson, and other SEC schools dominate this city. It really is a melting pot of football allegiances and Tech struggles to keep up, mainly due to disinterest from the student body and young alumni. Add in the fact that GT only has about 15,000 undergrads and you've got a recipe for lack of interest (and money). Lot of Tech students/grads are international or, quite frankly, too consumed with academics to really care about football. Hell, Paul Johnson had a "Learn Football" camp for international students. Anyone ever hear of that at any other ACC or SEC school?

4. Facilities - GT has had an indoor practice facility for years, but it also has the oldest FBS stadium in the country, and the constraints of being in the middle of Atlanta prevent the stadium from being further expanded or substantially remodeled. That being said, a new capital campaign has been started to update the Edge Center in the northeast corner of the stadium (badly needed) and locker room improvements are FINALLY happening.

THANKFULLY, we have a new AD that absolutely gets it and is putting us back on the right track: Todd Stansbury (who actually played football with my dad in the 80's at GT). He's finally back in Atlanta after he had huge success in his last job at UCF. He has already:
1. Sealed the Adidas deal
2. Settled on one true Tech Gold with a unique font to help branding
3. Launched several capital campaigns specifically for recruiting staff

Tl;dr: GT has inherent barriers to recruiting elite athletes, but the new AD is focused on helping the program return to national relevance through recruiting initiatives, marketing improvements, and facility upgrades. Tech will also never be on the level of UGA, Auburn, USC, etc.
Can we pull this off? Absolutely. Will we pull this off? Eh, not so sure about that.

Offense: McClendon did a good job calling the second half of the bowl game against Michigan and the first regular season game against Coastal, but it remains to be seen how the offensive game plan can perform against a sturdy defense. The interior line is as good as it's been in a while, so hopefully the offense can actually establish a ground game this season. I believe the ability to consistently run the ball will be the key on offense (only ran for 43 yards last season) so that the secondary can loosen up for our talented wide receivers and tight ends.

Defense: The losses of Taylor Stallworth, Dante Sawyer, and Skai Moore worry me for the defense's ability to stop the inevitable run-heavy offense of Georgia. Add in the fact that 3 new starters in the secondary are still being broken in, one of the top 5 DB's is suspended for the first half, and the best pass-rusher (DJ Wonnum) might be slowed by an ankle injury sustained against Coastal and I believe Georgia will score 31+ without question.

Bottom Line: I hate Georgia and want to believe that USC will win this game, but there are several crucial question marks on offense and defense that make it hard for me to have much confidence. That being said, Williams-Brice will be rocking and the defending SEC champs have a target on their back so the players will be extra motivated, anything can happen.

Score prediction: 34-24 UGA
I have a relative that actually spent nearly 8 years in the Hanoi Hilton and he hates McCain. Says that the only reason he graduated the Naval Academy was because of his father and that he buddied up with the Vietnamese that were running the prison camp, not to mention he hated his politics. I'll have to get his opinion on all of this coverage McCain is getting.

I work on Main Street, can confirm this statement.

I'd put USC girls up against any other SEC school's.

One of the best offenses in school history statistically. If that defense was half as good as it actually was I bet that’s another 10 win season,

Hell if we didn't blow late 4th quarter leads against Mizzou, UK, and Tennessee that season we would have won 9 regular season games and gone to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.
The 1961 Sigma Nu prank at the USC-Clemson game.
quote:

In 1961 before the Carolina-Clemson game, members of the Carolina chapter of Sigma Nu borrowed uniforms from Orangeburg High School and made their way on to the field at Williams-Brice to imitate the Clemson team during warm-ups, complete with pretending to milk cows, punting backwards over their heads, bumbling through plays and more. It took a few minutes for the Clemson crowd to catch on, but once they did, they were not happy

Clemson fans realized what was going on and stormed the field and melee ensued.
quote:

The level of description for what ensued varies depending on t he storyteller, everything from "melee" to "ruckus" to "brawl", but Hancock said it was more of a scuffle than a vicious fight between the two sides. He also said ticket allocation was very different then, and the entire east side of the stands was filled with Clemson fans so the Tiger fans weren't quite as outnumbered as they would be today.

Other than USC, I've been to the following:

Georgia - Pretty campus, just hilly. The projects adjacent to campus bring it down a little.
Florida - my first SEC road trip. I actually liked the campus and don't understand the hate it gets.
Vanderbilt - Very nice campus in the middle of a big city.
Tennessee - Probably my least favorite campus. The river and Ayres Hall were nice, but overall it was underwhelming.
Auburn - Reminded me a lot of Clemson, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Also, most hospitable fans I've experienced.
Alabama - Made a quick stop there on the way to Starkville 2 years ago, but it seemed very nice. Points for having a Canes on campus.
Miss. St. - Nothing special, and the bar scene sucked.
LSU - Haven't been for a game, but I love the LSU campus. The lake and the architecture are outstanding.

This season I'm going to Ole Miss and UK, and I have high hopes for both. I want to hit up A&M and Mizzou next season. May be a while before I get to Fayetteville though.

If you've never been to before, you have to try some true South Carolina mustard based bbq pulled pork. Here are a few places downtown or nearby that I would recommend:

Palmetto Pig - About $12 for the buffet, although it has fewer options than most others in the area. Excellent bbq and it's right next to campus.

Doc's Barbeque - $10.49 for the buffet (only open at lunch) and you will easily get your money's worth. Very close to the stadium, but it might to be hard to get in to on gameday.

Hudson's Smokehouse - This one is about 15 minutes outside of the city, but it is well worth it. This is my personal favorite, and the buffet is second to none. The bbq and fried catfish are amazing.

ETA: If mustard based sauce is not your thing, each of these places serves their pulled pork sauce-free so you can add whichever sauce you prefer.

Gotta be University of South Carolina alumna Ainsley Earhardt

Sorry for the grainy pic, try this one:

Her only flaw is that she had to go off and marry a former Clemson quarterback, Will Proctor.

Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands is a good event to attend. I'm not sure if any of the survivors are still among us. In the past, some of them would be at the start point and shake hands with people at the start. It's a really humbling experience.

I know of one that is still living and his name is Wayne Carringer. He now lives at the VA hospital in Asheville, NC and I had the honor of talking with him several times while my grandfather was in hospice care there. Truly an amazing man (and one of the biggest Trump supporters I've ever met).
