The upside is obvious: adding A&M opened up recruiting in the state of Texas.

Texas was 11-5 against A&M in the Big 12.
That included some of the biggest blowouts in the history of the series - scores like 51-15, 43-17, 50-20, 46-15, and 49-9.
Only time A&M had any success against Texas, it coincided with 2 major probations for A&M for paying players. A couple of those Aggie wins in the late 80's and early 90's weren't even on TV, because A&M was banned from TV by the NCAA.
