Vols redshirt freshman walk-on kicker Derrick Brodus was asleep on the couch when the football team knocked on his door. Dooley told CBSSports.com...
quote:

“We had to make a call to the frat house,” “This is no lie. We called the frat house and had a policeman go get him.”
Brodus is a former soccer player who needed to replace the injured Michael Palardy and his backup, Chip Rhome, who hurt himself during warmups. Supposedly he had never played a down of college football. He wasn’t even on the depth chart or on the gameday roster, but ended up with the game ball after the Vols beat Middle Tenn. St. 24-0.

Most likely he was already cleared. Most high school athletes get cleared even if they end up not playing in college. Also, the fact that he was previously red-shirted shows that he was already cleared.

How did he get through the NCAA clearinghouse so fast?
