This was posted in the main Secrant. I was wandering why does UGA have such a small endowment? I can understand Vandy, Missouri, AM having a large endowment b/c they are AAU membered research institutions but schools like Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama have more than us
Endowment is critical for scholarships, research spending, etc. Why do you think is the reason? It is worrisome specially when UGA wants to get into AAU so badly. Most of the schools in AAU has more than a billion endowment.

AAU membership really increases the universities profile by getting them big research bucks. It is essentially a lobbying organization.
From wikipedia
"The AAU acts as a lobbyist at its headquarters in the city of Washington, D.C. for research and higher education funding and on policy and regulatory issues affecting research universities. The association holds two meetings annually, both in Washington. Separate meetings are held for university presidents, provosts, and other officials. Because the meetings are private they offer the opportunity for discussion without media coverage, and prominent government officials, businessmen, and others often speak to the groups.[1]
"
This is the organization every research university aspires to be in.
"The largest attraction of the AAU for many schools, especially nonmembers, is prestige. For example, in 2010 the chancellor of nonmember North Carolina State University described it as "the pre-eminent research-intensive membership group. To be a part of that organization is something N.C. State aspires to."[1] A spokesman for nonmember University of Connecticut called it "perhaps the most elite organization in higher education. You'd probably be hard-pressed to find a major research university that didn't want to be a member of the AAU."

By the way, $745,000,000 is alot of money, especially for a state school that has no problem paying it's annual expenses from tuition, and no problem getting money from the state government for fun little projects, and no problem getting federal grant money for a variety of research activities, none of which touch the endowment.
It would make sense for Arkansas or Alabama to have schools with larger endowments because their state governments are poor.

UGA has no problems getting federal money for research. As a matter of fact, we are one of only three schools in the country that are still allowed to do human embryonic stem cell research with federal money....
ETA- that's a nice little fun fact to bring up to your liberal friends when they say Bush banned stem cell research and is the reason Michael J Fox suffers so needlessly....

The real question is why is it so much smaller than GT's, which graduates fewer students and has been around for a shorter period of time.

Auburn University Auburn, Alabama $471,851,000 19.4%

While it is true we do get federal research grants. It has always been an upward battle. Specially during this current economic times when the federal research funds are declining.
November 08, 2013 article from Athen Banner Herald
"But UGA research funding could slip this year and next because of declining federal budgets, Lee told board members of the foundation, meeting in UGA’s Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
UGA got about $134 million in federal research funding in 2004, about $160 million in the 2013 fiscal year, according to a graph Lee showed the board."
If UGA was in AAU it would be a huge plus during these times. One source of UGA's income is licensing discoveries and that has really declined from what it has been.

Lee is lying to you Dawgnational, the federal budget isn't declining next year, or the year after.
You should read the whole article you posted too... this is a telling couple of paragraphs.
See.... every state budget comes with a blank page each year that UGA gets to fill out, for whatever it wants, and noone in the state house is going to challenge it. You don't need a really large endowment when you can take what you want from the tax payers... millions of tax payers...
Would you rather have 1.5 billion in real estate holdings or taxing authority over 6 million people?

But the foundation should reach into its funds to the tune of about $5 million to boost the growth of a new Center for Molecular Medicine, plus $10.5 million, spread out over four years to pay for a special hiring initiative to attract top researchers to the university, according to Lee’s budget report.
In addition, UGA, using state dollars, will begin assuming some bills the foundation has been footing such as nearly $2 million in lab equipment and other such start-up cost for new hires.

frick it. It's Grantham's fault for squandering opportunities for donations to our endowment with every missed tackle in the secondary.

You do make a great point. I think University of Connecticut has essentially been doing just that. They only have a $311,331 (209 in the nation) endowment but have a massive research spending. I know they are a powerhouse in the fields of neroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, etc fields of research. They had nearly $200 million dollars in research.

Endowments have almost nothing to do with football spending...

x1000. So 1,608,248,000.
