I'm excited to have a new promising QB.

Our offense is about to enter the modern age.

I think we need about 5 more Newman threads.

Only if coordination of our offense enters the modern age.
But yea, I'm exciting about the possibilities with a mobile 6'4" 230 lb. QB who seems to be able to make accurate throws down-field. With play-calling that takes advantage of his dual-threat potential, we should be able to stretch the field and open up the running game more. This is exactly what Clemson did with Trevor Lawrence vs OSU; Lawrence became a major factor in the running game.

I really think the offense this year could have been better if Fromm has the ability to be dangerous on the zone reads and RPOs to take some attention off the RBs but him pulling it and running was never much of an option.

Why do you think it was not an option?

Other than Fromm not being very athletic, I think part of the reason was risk of injury to Fromm knowing that we did not have a quality backup after Fields departed.

Either Jake was told to just hand it off to not risk injury and even wide open he’s not gaining that much with his athleticism OR he read the play and chose not to run. But I know of several instances where I was screaming for him to keep it.

When you run an option type play, you call the play as an option or call it as a hard call... meaning, you are handing it off. If it is the option and the D end crashes, a slow QB will get 2 to 3 yards unless there are some other things going on. I agree that a lot of the time, it seemed like the D end wasn’t respecting the keep. This makes me believe that for whatever reason, we didn’t want him to keep it. You can say he was slow and that is why, but you can watch many slow QBs make that play work for good yards. I really think we wanted him to pull it to more of a RPO than having him run it, which is a great play and keeps the LBs honest, but we saw press too much and it wasn’t there a lot. I believe he was already dinged from something earlier in the season and with our lack of depth, we didn’t want to have him take more hits than he needed to.

QBs who are used to doing more running seem to handle that kind of stuff better, but every time a QB takes a hit or fall on their throwing arm, shoulder, hand or head it can affect their ability to throw and make reads.

I understand all that perfectly. Which is why my real opinion is that the coaches liked the team and the defense and said “Jake just don’t keep any of these reads for yourself because the only guy behind you is Stetson Bennett. With you we have a shot but with him we don’t.”
