UGA Band to Honor Gregg Allman at Halftime

In the summer of 1969, I was living in Atlanta on 9th Street just a couple of blocks from Piedmont Park.

Every day I would go into Piedmont Park and The Allman Brothers Band would be there playing their music.

At the time I thought they were just a bunch of local "hippies" practicing their music and they would play all of their old classics over and over for hours.

I went to the park and listened to them every day until one morning when I went into the park to listen to them they weren't there.

I remember saying to my friend, "Hey, where are the Allman Brothers?"

They never played in Piedmont Park again and the rest is history.

It wasn't until years later I realized how lucky I was that I got to listen to them play in Piedmont Park.

The band's image was radical in the just barely integrated Macon: "A lot of the white folk around here did not approve of them long-haired boys, or of them always having a black guy with them," said Hudson.[29] The band performed locally, as well as 80 miles north in Atlanta's Piedmont Park, and practiced at the newly minted Capricorn nearly each day.[28]

I remember there was an old bandstand in Piedmont Park where the Allman Brothers would play on.

I knew who they were but I didn't try to meet any of them. I just enjoyed listening to them and didn't want to bother them while they played.

There was usually a small group of no more than 25-50 local "hippies" who were always hanging around the old bandstand listening to them.

I heard them singing, "...tied to the whipping post..." and "...one more silver dollar..." every day.

I remember waking up one morning and saying to one of my "hippie" friends that I was living with (there were 16 of us living together in a house on 9th Street that was behind Grady High School), "Let's go into the park and listen to the Allman brothers" and we went to the bandstand but the Allman brothers weren't there. I was surprised that they weren't there because they played there every day for hours so I asked a "hippie" friend who was hanging out at the old bandstand, "Hey, where are the Allman brothers?" He just shook his head and said, "I don't know." I never saw them playing in Piedmont Park after that.

It was great that I to got to listen to them play before they became famous and I don't care if you don't believe me.

This is SO Awesome!!! I've had the pleasure of meeting all the Brothers over the years,except Duane and Berry Oakley. I played drums in an Allman Brothers Tribute band,so of the most fun I've ever had in my life.Actually went to the funeral.R.I.P.

I said I saw Bear Bryant wearing his famous houndstooth hat and leaning against the goalpost after we beat Bama 18-17. I also didn't say anything about him smoking a pipe.

I said I went to UGA from 1964-68 and there were already black students attending UGA. However, there were still segregated restrooms at the time but that was ended while I was attending UGA without my involvement.
