Redshirt Question

Does the player have say in the decision to burn their redshirt - as in if they say no? Just curious - let's say there is an immediate need due to injury which lasts longer than the allowable games and when the injured player comes back, and the redshirted basically goes back to zero playing time and the season is practically over for them due to lack of need. Stupid question I know, but curious as if who controls that.

This doesn't address your question, but on redshirting, I think they should do away with it, and say everyone has 5 years of eligibility. If, in your fifth year, you get hurt in game one and can't play the rest of your season, I think there should be a process to apply for a medical bonus 6th season, similar to how medical redshirts worked prior to 2018.
In the context of UGA, it may not make as much sense, it's almost like we can't get rid of busts fast enough to make room for the new hotshits each year.... but when you look around at the other 100+ programs out there, I think such rules would be great for CFB parity. On the academic side, which sadly isn't as much of focal point at the big football schools, it gives enterprising young student athletes more of an opportunity to get post-grad scholarship money for master's work. Let's face it - most bachelor degrees aren't worth as much as they were 20 years ago.
Sorry for not answering your stupid question.

Thanks for the stupid answer
Just kidding - good point and a different view I haven't thought about

Redshirting at UGA is pointless unless medically necessary.
We are trying to recruit (and portal) at a level at every position that we dont have room under the 85 for a bunch of 5th year and 6th year guys.
I understand benefits of a student athlete who can focus on grades, gaining weight, and adapting to college life without the strain of gamedays.
But very rarely does that mean a 5th year will benefit the university and player.

Agreed, for UGA, Bama, others.
The vast majority of the cfb landscape, however, would benefit from more eligibility.
As long as we are doing away with amateurism and all the free agency shite in the portal, why don't we throw a bone to the 90% of cfb players that don't benefit from any of that?
