Primary concerns on defense for me have been the style of tackling that we attempt. While I think the traditional "form tackle" is largely overrated, I do think we could stand to teach a bit more wrapping up/drag down rather than just going for big hits... Most of the yards that Alabama racked up (along with other schools) were yards after contact. That is an inexcusable stat for a defense with the level of talent that we supposedly had this year.

Making contact count and allowing your teammates to help finish off the tackle is critical. Also, we can't count on offensive holding penalties ever given our reputation for being a heavily penalized team. We have to find ways to shed blocks better and make the holds more obvious. I think that is one of the places where our D-line coaching has struggled over the years. We don't create enough movement on our d-line regularly to make holding obvious... if the jersey isn't getting pulled away from the body, you're not going to get the calls. This makes it a lot easier to run...

Lots of qb pressure and lots of sacks is what makes it less obvious our players are being held.

There's also something to be said about the big hits that force turnovers vs the drag down.

Another topic for discussion... by end of 2013, which of those players that noone has ever heard of (outside of dawg fans) will likely be All-SEC or All Americans that everyone else knows about?

We aren't seeing a ton of holds on dropback pass attempts. When I see it is on fairly generic run plays. That's really the crux of where we got gashed by Alabama. They struggled passing the ball most of the game but just straight up the gut run plays and we struggled to get off of blocks.

I get it. Turnovers are great, but I think you have to pick your spots. When you're up by 2 scores and really just need to hold a team to a field goal or punt, then the turnover or bust is not a great strategy. We're only 5th in the conference in turnovers generated and 4th in turnover margin. I'd say largely, Alabama is able to generate the same (technically 1 more) amount of turnovers while limiting the big play downsides. Have to find that happy medium.

Not sure it's really discussable at this point. I think we all like the possibilities that Jenkins, Ray Drew, JHC, and others bring to the table. Unfortunately, until I see how the entire unit comes together, I'm not sure I could point to any one or two players and say they are going to get the opportunities to stand out. Whoever fills in the hole left by Jarvis will likely get an opportunity to become a stand out pass rusher but he's got big shoes to fill. Someone in the secondary could get some chances to really play ball hawk.

I feel like if next year's team is going to be successful, it will be less about individual players standing out and more about a better cohesive unit than we had this year. Guys that collectively say, we're getting shite done.

16 4-stars and 1 five star. Edit that's TWO five stars. Edit Again... that's three Five stars.

Loaded with talent... and must play as a unit like you say, Dr. Nautilus.

I've got my eyes on Herrera and Jenkins, and whatever they can find for that 200# Kentucky transfer (edit John Bailey) to do.. the track star. He's a little light for linebacker, but at 200# and track speed he could certainly run down some plays and make some big hits... maybe play him at Safety, maybe return some kicks too.

Thats a great projected lineup. Can't wait to see what they can do on the field. I actually like that lineup better than 2012. A smaller and quicker NG cant hurt...will actually be a good thing

Imma thinkin' you can add Damien Swann to the household name list....

He took B. Smith's job from him & played great at CB the 2nd half of the season...

Yeah, I'd say of the guys in the secondary, he's the most likely to have an impressive year. Has good experience for sure.

Another positive post!

How many teams would love to look at that roster as a "rebuilding year" ?

DE Garrison Smith/James Deloach/Sterling Bailey
DT John Taylor/Chris Mays/John Atkins(Dont Forget he was a Under Armour AA) with offers from everybody, and I do mean everybody/Toby Johnson(if we get him)
DE Ray Drew/Mike Thornton/M Adams(if we get him)
OLB Jordan Jenkins/T.J. Stripling
OLB Josh Harvey-Clemons/Leonard Floyd/Dexter Morant
ILB Josh Dawson/Ramik Wilson
ILB Amarlo Herrera/Chase Vasser/Reuben Foster(if we get him)
CB Damian Swann/Brendan Langley
CB Sheldon Dawson/Devin Bowman
S Corey Moore/Paris Bostick
S Shaq Fluker/Trey Matthews

JHC will put on weight before summer just like Tree did and will be just as good. The sleeper is gonna be James Deloach. Like Coach Grantham mentioned before the season people stop talking about him because he got hurt(broken Arm) his senior year but still had 8 sacks in 4 games. Quick as shite. He gonna be around 290 and will be a Beast. If we get Adams, Foster, and Toby Johnson they will get pt. If we land those 3 there will be plenty of top competition at every position................
(Puts on Glasses) I see a Championship D right there

John Atkins and Ray Drew will be battling neck and neck for that DE spot opposite Smith. Drew needs to put on a little more weight to help support the run. Atkins is going to be a monster at DE for us.

At NG, Kwame will be the starter. No question about that. Then it will be a battle between Taylor and Mayes. We may actually have better DEPTH at NG this year than we did last year but the quality of our starter will drop slightly.

Thorton and Bailey are the wild cards here. Bailey actually fits the mold of DE for us really well. He'll be an integral part of our run defense at some point in time. Might be this year. Could be next year. Injuries and his need to gain weight have slowed him from getting on the field but he is now up to 290. Thorton is who I'm really excited about. He's perfect for DE in our system but has been stuck rushing the passer at NG due to our lack of depth at that position. I think we can move him to DE now where he should compete for a starting roll. Quality depth at that position. Also, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him as the starter opposite garrison smith come the clemson game.

Adding Toby Johnson, depending on where he is in his recovery, could be very big for us. He is a hell of a player. Also, Monty Adams, if he chooses to come, will play at times as he has too much talent to keep off the field.

I have no clue what will happen at 2 of our 4 linebacker spots. Jordan Jenkins and Hererra will be starting. Could see Josh Dawson move into a starting roll at OLB. Ramik could be somewhere. What happens if we land foster? How about the other talented freshmen? All I know is, we are STACKED for the next few years at LB. Great problem to have.

I bite my nails on a daily basis thinking about our secondary. All I know is swan will be a starter. Sheldon Dawson may be the other starter coming into next year. No idea what's going to happen at safety.

IF you see bowman in the game... just start praying.

Leonard Floyd
Ryne Rankin
Reuben Foster(if we land him)
Johnny Oneal
Reggie Carter
Tim Kimbrough
Bostick(if he moves to LB)

This class is downright nasty.

I forgot Leonard Floyd, He was nasty coming out of high school a year ago. I can see him rotating with JHC at OLB if Morant can't get into the scheme. JHC was over 215 LBS back in october and i think he will be over 230 before the season starts.
