That is the part I hate as you hit the webs when it is dark and you know they are about somewhere. Hit a really big one once to the great amusement of the cops who were watching across the street.

I think this is them but they get brilliant red in the fall

Yep. Those things.

Not near as big as the ones in the OP but still hate em.

I have always called those monkey spiders. They are impossible to google because you get millions of hits on spider monkeys. I have no idea what their scientific name is.

Every house or apartment I've ever lived in in Georgia had one set up by the porch light. Being nocturnal, they were great drunken entertainment before cell phones... throw little bits of things in their web and watch them go apeshit on it. Savage little bastards.

When I was little, a man named “Okefenokee Joe” visited my elementary school. He brought boxes and bags full of snakes and spiders and other things and dumped them out on the floor one by one and told us all about what each one liked to eat and where they sleep. And other things.

When he brought out this one particular spider like the one in your photo, he told a story about how one of that spider’s relatives once spun a giant web across the front door of his swamp cabin. And said he spent the whole summer entering his cabin through the side window so as not to disturb his spider neighbor and his beautiful web on his door.

It was then and there at that exact moment that I committed to a laid back life of ease. Free as the wind in the trees. In harmony with nature.

In short, it was when I became swampwise ha ha ha haa I’m swampwise.

I think they are barn spiders, or at least thats what I call them.

Some folks call it a monkey spider, I call it a barn spider.

What I hate is they only spin their web at night so it is not there in the daytime and you would know to avoid it or get the flamethrower out.

In the 1950's when god knows what they put in women's hairspray it became a lethal flamethrower in the right hands.

Generally I am totally cool with spiders as long as they respect my space, life is calm. When they invade my space then I will defend it by whatever means necessary.

PS, zombie spiders, I like where this could go from a movie plot.

That’s the opposite of swampwise. That’s swamptarded.

How many trailers in Kentucky would you estimate burn to ground every year with fools trying to kill web-moths with hairspray fire?

You do realize my summers as a youth were spent in Georgia with my cousins. Learned how to make pipe bombs and all sorts of things involving fire and explosions. To my knowledge, none of them ever burned anything down. I think one went on to work the volunteer fire department as we have some old family photos of him in gear on a truck from the old days.

I loved Okefenokee Joe! Totally forgot about him. Was he the guy who would also pitch teepee or was that a different dude?

Whatever, dude. I can stalk a buck deer, take him by surprise. I can disappear right in front of your eyes. With a knife and a blanket, I can survive. I'm swampwise.

Been raising this beauty right outside my bedroom window. Black and yellow garden spider. Was tiny when she first appeared...wasn't even sure it's what she was, but she's grown rapidly.
