Unfortunately, he was one of, if not the only, irreplaceable players on the team.

He is the only Sunday ready player at that position.

However, Jalen Carter makes everyone around him better.
It may not be consistent, but we could see improved play from the position with the improved play from the DL (underclassmen improving and upperclassmen finding their roles) and other linebackers (smael).

Smith can still be a vocal leader in that room and on the sidelines.

Too bad he is also hurt. Limited to 8 snaps vs Florida?

Carter and smith were the main reasons for optimism of replacing so many badass defenders with little drop off.

Now we might have 1/2 of one of them in a likely playoff eliminator game against an elite offense.

We limited him to 3rd and 4th downs.

When the game was in the bag, we sat him on those too.

Florida was 4 for 16 on 3rd down and 0 for 3 on fourth (edit to add... may have been 0 for 4 if we didn't call timeout)

he played 19 snaps on 3rd/4th downs and was perfectly fine in them. Will play a lot more this weekend.

Correct. It was 8 passing snaps, 11 rushing snaps.

Probably a bit much to ask him to suddenly go for 50 snaps.

8 to 50 would be quite the leap.

20 to 35 isn't a leap at all.

For a team struggling to get sack and heavy pressure this really hurts from all aspects. Beal has been zero threat from the other side.

They will need to call upon Jones and scheme up various blitz packages. UF game took out three OLB, the one position the defense couldn't afford to lose anyone.

We have struggled to gets sacks.

We have not struggled to get heavy pressure. Nolan was a big part of that though.

Honestly the defense hasn't faced many elite or close to any QBs. The good ones can handle moderate pressure.

Young was proof of that last season. Hooker seems to be on the same level this season. Hopefully the staff and players can generate enough to rattle him.

I knew I saw him. 8 snaps is all he had? Where do you get snap counts from?

It no doubt has to be a concern.

ETA
I see where this has been corrected...or clarified.
