Ummm...you are assuming that they care. Some of 'em were walking off the field smiling and joking around.
They didn't want to be there. They knew they had been passed over for the playoffs in favor of the unworthy Notre Dame.
So, they gave a half-assed effort, both in practice and in the game.
Maybe Smart could have done something to change their attitude, maybe not...

Um, sweetie, I didn’t post he was about to get fired, however, this was the 2005 Sugar Bowl all over again where we lost to an inferior West Virginia team (‘member that game?) and afterwards the wheels fell off because Richt wouldn’t fix what needed to be fixed, as in getting rid of Willy Mart right after. Mark my words, we’ll keep Chaney and the program will go down because of it.

True, you said his "downfall" which means the destruction of a person/entity. Since it is unlikely that the University will have him killed, the next most likely form of destruction would be firing him.
