n the early going at least, Georgia appears to be focused on four primary targets: Xavier associate head coach Jonas Hayes, Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates, Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes and USC head coach Andy Enfield.
Chip is either an idiot or has bad sources. Maybe both.

“It’s time for us to hire one of our own,” said Mark Slonaker, who played and coached for Hugh Durham at Georgia, was head coach at Mercer University for several years and recently retired from UGA Athletics as a senior administrator in development. “We haven’t ever done it. We have a highly qualified (candidate) ready to do it. Jonas is going to bring in talent, and he’s going to be great for the program. He was one of the most popular players we’ve had here, and he could really heal the Bulldog Nation.”
And slonaker is borderline retarded

What's the problem with Hayes? Genuinely asking because I am uninformed.

According to the article, the UGA Lettermen are pushing hard for Jonas Hayes to come back home to UGA from Xavier.
Oh Sweet Jesus.
Well, it's Brooks who's legacy is on the line, not mine.

I want an experienced coach. Not a neophyte. Love Jonas but we need someone w/experience and who is a program builder.

Christ.
And I guess Chip didn't get the memo that Forbes is getting an extension.
I'll lose all faith in Josh Brooks if he hires Jonas.

There isn't one except he's not a shiny enough new toy for some of these people.

Listening to Buck now on 680, he is saying it's gonna be Jonas.
Well, if that's the case, I just lost all faith in Josh Brooks as AD.

There isn't necessarily a problem with him, it's just that we don't need to hire him. He has never been a head coach first and foremost, which should be strikes 1-3. Seemingly the biggest thing he has going in his favor is the ol greg mcgarity standard of "do they have ties to uga". Jay clark, courtney kupets, joni taylor, etc. All with uga ties. Even guys that actually HAVE had some success like smart and perno...uga people. Whether someone has ties to uga or not shouldn't even remotely be a consideration when it comes to a hire. Period. People think that because jonas played and was an assistant here and was known as a pretty good recruiter that that will simply solve all of our problems. We are in such a bad way right now we need to hit a grand slam with a PROVEN WINNER. As in, a guy that has proven he can lead a winning basketball program. Jonas has never even led a program at all. Ity would simply be the laziest hire known to man, and based on Brooks' resume so far he seems the opposite of lazy and uninspired.

I would LOVE to hear your case for why JOnas is literally the BEST candidate in america that we should hire.

Buck has good sources. If he says something concerning the program 9 X out of 10 he's right.

Well said.
Miller or bust for me.

sorry but this is just laughable. Any time I hear some bucks nugget he's either weeks behind or flat out wrong.
If buck says jonas is the guy getting hired, I would bet money that it's anyone BUT jonas.

I actually haven't listened to Buck before today in a minute.
And you're probably right.

I saw this over on another site by a poster who is on the Jonas bandwagon. He makes a compelling case:
quote:
Hire Jonas Hayes. Here's why...
The other options just aren't great: The truly successful coaches won't leave their current jobs for a total rebuild at UGA, hiring a "tainted" coach like Sean Miller or Rick Pitino just isn't going to happen after our history with Jim Harrick, the recently-fired guys aren't really any different than hiring Tom Crean, and we've never had any luck with mid-major coaches as Tubby left for greener pastures after brief success whereas Dennis Felton and Mark Fox just couldn't get us over the top.
In contrast, consider what Jonas brings to the table...
He played and coached at UGA and therefore knows the program and area very well
He came up through the local AAU circuit
He personally went through the transfer process as a player (transferred from WCU to UGA) and would likely need to heavily recruit the transfer portal
He's specifically known to be a strong recruiter
He's very well-liked and respected among former players and administrators
He played under the most successful coach we've had in decades, Jim Harrick, who also happened to employ a pretty entertaining style of play
He hasn't been a head coach yet, but he's had assistant or administrative responsibilities at Belmont Abby, SC State, Morehouse, UGA, and is now Associate Head Coach at Xavier. Jonas is 40 years old now and he's been prepping for a job like this for a very long time.
It would be a stretch to say it's the basketball equivalent of hiring Kirby Smart for football, but it's at least in the same ballpark. At the very worst, it would be kinda like South Carolina hiring Shane Beamer who just won "First year coach of the year" in college football.
Time to hire one of our own.

According to the article, he's not even on the list to be considered. The search team has it possibly down to these names:
Xavier associate head coach Jonas Hayes
Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates
Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes
USC head coach Andy Enfield
We know Forbes just got a new contract so that removes him.

That's from Chip. He's almost as clueless as Buck is.
