Tell me again what is blueshirt?
Greyshirt is where you oopsy daisy ran out of scholarship so player is preferred walkon for a year. That's my understanding.
Yeah, I had to look it up myself last NSD. My understanding (and it is fuzzy) is this:
If you are at the maximum number of initial counters, it is possible to take an athlete on as a signee *if you have the scholarship total under 85 available* but count him as an initial counter in the subsequent class. It's essentially the opposite of back-counting early enrollees...
In hindsight, it looks like it may not have been worth it given that we have the same kicker we already had *and* gave him a scholarship, but if it caused Hot Rod to compete his arse off this year, then I'd say it did the job and was worth the price.
Greyshirt is generally a PWO for the first semester, picking up scholly in January along with any EEs for the upcoming class. They still end up being an "initial counter" because if you give a scholarship at any time during the first 2 years on campus for an athlete, they become an initial counter. *This* is partially why I believe Smart couldn't offer Rod a scholarship last season.

I have no doubt Kirby will do whatever it takes money wise to keep Dell around as long as possible. Dell is on track to become a head coach at a big program before too long, we're definitely going to miss him.

seems unnecessarily complicated

Blame Saban... none of that shite existed until he started signing 30+ players every year and the rest of the country complained.

One can only hope.

I dunno if he'll jump straight to HC. He was RB coach at Southern, took Interim HC for bowl game, then moved to RB coach at UGA. My guess is he'll need some time as either an OC or an Associate HC type position before he can make that jump. Hopefully that gives us at least 2-3 more seasons with him if we can bump him up to some kind of Assoc. HC type role and increase salary commensurate with what he might make as an OC at a mid tier program.

Dell, Coley, and Schumann all seem happy in Athens. Like Saban, Kirby will network a minor league of replacements for any coach that leaves. Just win really, and the process keeps going. Time to collect some dust.

When are they supposed to come out with something official on the pending red shirt changes? I forget what the proposal was exactly, but something like RS guys can play in a couple games as a RS with no penalty. This would be an ideal change given the way our recruiting is trending.

Anybody else jizz in their pants when Fields said " something special is brewing, you guys just don't know" in regards to the 2018 class?

Fields with 6 TDs in the 1st half tonight. Trying to find a link to one of his runs where he just broke some dude’s ankles.

No clue really. I let the smart folks handle the rules and scholarship limits. I know medical reds can help you graduate processed players
I do know if it can be thought of, someone is hired to do it well.
Bama redshirts 35-40% of their players. Add in a 10% attrition, and we'll need 25, that qualify, every year. Can't back count anymore. No signing 32

That's why the remaining spots are so valuable. They have to be filled, but very selectively. Getting attention from people we have to wait on. It's a good thing.

Actually, blame Butch.
We had never heard of blue shirts until Tennessee did it a few years ago.
I don't like it personally.

You don't want to waste a spot on this kid.
He's not a SEC caliber player unless he's suiting up in Lexington or Nashville.
ETA: I see I made at least one person mad, so I guess I should explain my comments above.
Johnson was initially ranked as a Top 10 player overall for this class before his Junior season. His ranking has plummeted in every update since then. He played opposite Shaun Wade last year and got exposed as the weak link in the Trinity secondary.
His play so far this season hasn't been any better. He may be a good kid, but there are better players on your radar.

For blue shirts, I think you might be right. I was referring to the entire concept of "initial counters" and the chaos that we go through to determine possible class sizes now

I heard this thrown out a few times but never saw an official announcement that it was accepted. Not disagreeing, just wondering if you have a link to where this was finally settled/agreed on?
Quick Google search turned up this article from this year on MSU's recruiting class:
LINK
quote:
With 22 current verbal commits after the addition of Olive Branch defensive lineman Fabien Lovett, Mississippi State expects to sign the limit of 25, and that number could be higher for the Bulldogs. MSU could oversign by back-counting mid-year enrollees to the previous year’s class, a practice that the NCAA permits. The number isn’t finite yet, of course, because plenty could happen, including decommits, between now and when players can sign in December.
Certainly possible that the guy from the Clarion-Ledger could be wrong, but just can't recall seeing anything that prohibited it now.
ETA: Found USF article that references it still being possible as well? LINK
quote:
Notice that’s academic year, so players who enroll in January via transfer or graduating high school early can be “back-counted” towards the previous year’s class. And that’s a big caveat likely to help the Bulls in 2018.
By our count:
There are 81 USF football players currently on scholarship.
The Bulls only signed just 23 towards the 2017-18 class, and could “back-count” two more for this year via early enrollment.
There are 19 current players on scholarship whose eligibility will expire after the 2017 season.

Hey... Kirby learned from the best. The rules are made to be bent, right?

Haven't seen the new film this year myself, but that seems to be the general consensus amongst people that I know and trust. It's unfortunate, but sounds like he has really just not continued to improve and part of that may come from the diva like nature surrounding his belief in his skills as a CB. I'll try to reserve judgement mostly until I have some time to watch, but I do think we've cooled on him a bit for much of the same reasons you mentioned. I'll trust Kirby and Co's evaluation myself... if they think they should look elsewhere, they're probably right.
