Yeah if we dont' win this one we don't have much hope at doing anything substantial come late March.

Do you consider the NIT to be "substantial"?
Posted on 1/21/16 at 2:13 am to djsdawg
For our program, yes. We need to make the NIT and extend our season. Really important for us to play meaningful postseason games (ncaa or nit, no others count)

In my post above I was talking about the tourney being substantial. I, along with many others, predicted us to be a fringe tourney team that would probably live on the bubble all season. If we were to lose yesterday, our chances would be all but gone.
I've expected all offseason and still do expect us to make the NIT.

Last night's game was painful to watch, but at least we pulled out the W. Arkansas plays Kentucky tonight and then a short turn around to get to Athens for Saturday's game, so hopefully that helps us end our shitty Saturday home game losing streak

I think We are gonna have to go 10-2 from here on out to be able to play in the bubble this year.

I've accepted we aren't making the tourney, I just hope we get a good draw in the NIT.
This isn't going to happen, in fact it likely won't even be remotely close, but it's POSSIBLE we could lose every remaining SEC game. I don't know anything at all about MSU, but other than them every team we play is either our equal or better, or is on the road.

No way, our RPI isn't that terrible (67 today). With 13 games left in the regular season (remember we have the one @ Baylor) 8-5 with a win in the SEC tourney would have us on the bubble. 9-4 probably gets us in, 10-3 and we'd be a lock IMO.
With all that said I'm not terribly optimistic we close well. I'd guess 8-5 down the stretch and we're sweating big time on selection Sunday.

15-17 wins... Gonna need at least 1 win in SECT to lock up a NIT bid. No way this team makes the NCAAT, and quite frankly, we suck and would lose in the 1st in game/2nd round.

Heading into the season, we knew:
-we were losing marcus and nemi, which were both MAJOR losses
-juwan parker's health was in question
-we lost a promising win in cam forte
-we had a bunch of freshmen who had potential but have never played
I think based on all that, plus the fact that we had to sweat a bit LAST year to get in, plus the fact that the SEC overall was going to be better this year....made it unlikely we'd return to the tourney anyway. I think that was always our ceiling if everythign worked perfectly, but I was always more realistic about making the NIT, which I think all things considered would be fine.
Next year, with a starting lineup of Turtle, JJ, KPG/EW/Edwards, Ogbeide, Maten is formidable enough to make a return to the tourney. Gonna really suck losing gaines (and to a lesser extent mann) but we should be so good down low and have enough in teh backcourt, I'd think.

Trending in the right direction, but these losses this year have been pretty disappointing

We're UGA basektabll, we're always going to have some games that we shouldn't lose. We were talking about it earlier but we could very easily be 13-3 right now. Like, extremely easily.
But such is life. At least we're a far cry from what we were under felton. My hope is that this constant (albeit slooow) improvement is raising our floor up considerably. Now we just need to raise the ceiling too.

I'm pretty young and didn't follow UGA basketball under Felton (outside of the 2008 run) but was it really that bad and is there a noticeable culture change with Fox?

Brother you honestly can't even comprehend how lucky you are to start following UGA basketball when you did. It's almost like a young fellow starting to follow bama football in 09
Yes, we were that bad. Like, indescribably bad. Awful coaching, a military-like approach to everything (including no facial hair for players), and overall awful recruiting. To felton's credit he did get some big fish, but he got far more absolute duds. And some of those "big fish" either transferred, left early, or didn't pan out.
Now, we go into every game expecting to at least be competitive. I think as of now, or at least the past few seasons, we go into 90% of our games thinking that it wouldn't be an utter shock if we won. With felton, you were just hoping to keep it respectable in the second half. When we played UK or UF you didn't even watch because of how bad it'd be.
I'd say there is somewhat of a culture change, but not a complete 180. The difference is we're just a better program. Fox isn't a stellar recruiter but he's 10x the coach felton was.
I'm fairly young myself and got into UGA bball in late middle/early HS when we had harrick. Boy those were fun times. Good to very good players at every position and elite coaching. Harrick wasn't very good at recruiting (compared to the big boys anyway) but hell the man knew how to coach basketball. I will go to my grave thinking one of hte biggest mistakes/frick ups/regrets I have about UGA athletics in my life will be dooley/adams pulling that 03 team from the postseason. That was a top 2 or 3 team in school history.

Felton had his one moment in the sun, and I won't ever forget that SEC championship game... one of my favorite game memories because it was just so strange to be playing that game in the almost empty GA Tech arena. Other than that the Felton era was dog shite... like literal dog shite could probably play ball as well as our teams did on some nights.

Big game tonight boys, we need to avoid coming out slow and hopefully we can slow down Ben Simmons. I hope Yante and Derek are ready to go tonight.

Some of the most fun I've ver had watching basketball was staying up to watch that 2008 UGA team in Atlanta. Couple that with what we had done in 2007 for football and what we would go on to do in Baseball in 2008 and, hellfire, what a fun fricking school year that was
