Headed to Tokyo 12/29 - 1/7 & have no game plan yet. Also thinking about taking the train to Kyoto for a couple days. We’re piggy backing off a business trip & will have two teenage boys in tow. Any suggestions on what part of the city to stay and what to avoid? Any other tips are welcome.

New Years Eve in Japan is a GREAT time to be there. It was always one of my favorite times of the year in Japan. Make sure to ask for the location of a temple to participate. The Japanese go to the temples and shrines on New Years, at night, usually in the late evening. Than at midnight they ring the bell 108 times. This is believed to wipe away your sins and then you eat yummy soba noodles. It's very festive and fun and accessible. They also eat traditional foods the next day, particularly MOCHI, which if you are lucky you can watch old timers make in a big vat with wooden mallets.
Lucky you.
Lucky you.

Go to this Website and hire a guide name Patrick Lovell.
He absolutely made our trip to Japan. He is an American who has studied Japanese history and has lived in Japan for over 40 years. He also was a professor at Temple University’s campus in Tokyo.
He does tours and trips all over the country. He really knows all about the history, customs, and traditions of the Japanese people. I couldn’t recommend him enough.

I felt relatively safe all over Tokyo. Avoid super touristy stuff and try to get in local restaurants and events. I stayed with someone who had been there a year and knew a little Japanese and it helped. People are SUPER nice and friendly. I loved everything about it.

There are about 20 reasons to go to Kyoto, pick any 4-8 over a couple of days.
The Shinkansen is enough reason to travel for the kids to experience it.
I last stayed at the Kyoto Brighton Hotel there: English Link

We'll be back in Japan in January and want to do Kyoto and maybe Osaka this time. We love to just kind of wander around until something strikes our fancy, but would also like to have a few cool things in our back pocket as well.

Get a rail pass beforehand if you’re going to Kyoto.

Stayed at Park Hotel Tokyo earlier this year, very cool lots of art. It is right next to shimbashi station where you can get anywhere in the city. You can walk to the Ginza area from there too. Check out the Digital Arts Museum the teenage boys will think its really cool. Right next to that there is a gain ferris wheel and something todo with Toyota and has a lot of cars on display you can see and get in.
Kyoto was my Wife's favorite place we visited. In Kyoto check out Arashiyama Monkey Park you can see monkeys up close after to short hike up the mountain. For something cool and unique to eat you can check out Fire Ramen not the best put cool.
