I don't think some of us celebrate him, but rather some of us empathize with him and project some of our own insecurities on to him. When you hear his radio messages, it's very human. With that out of the way, I think some contractor hate is justified and some isn't. I run into good ones, and I run into bad ones. The entire schedule is a house of cards. So many moving parts across multiple jobs. It's like juggling chainsaws. That said, even the best drop the ball on communication from time to time. I know I'm guilty. I like to believe I'm the best in my trade in my area, but I also recognize that I fall short from time to time.
I've seen people come into the industry thinking they could do better, and they get their ego checked pretty quickly. Making things worse is the huge influx of private equity into the trades. Many good owners with valuable businesses have sold out to PE, and that leaves you, the average consumer, with the option of using a shite PE-owned company, or a company that wasn't worth PE's money. Any good companies outside of those two are so booked up that they likely don't work for your schedule or budget.

What's interesting to me is watching movies after I have more life experience. Things hit differently at different times in your life. I don't think that's profound or eye-opening, but it is interesting to look at from outside of yourself and try and understand what's happened in your life to make you interpret art differently than you once had.
What I once thought was edgy is now straight cheese, or what was once a romcom now hits way too close to home. Someone mentioned Fifth Element, and that's an example of one I thought was edgy and awesome and is pretty hard for me to watch anymore. The first time I saw Love Actually I hated it, but I've oddly come to at least enjoy it (maybe not love).
I also have to remind myself to judge a film based on when it was made, and not when I'm watching it. If a film had a lot of copy-cats or set a style, it may age worse than it really deserves.
It's also fun to look at from a technical standpoint. The more I learn about things like photography, lighting, sound, writing, etc, the more I can appreciate something I used to take for granted.
I loved Dances with Wolves as a kid, but it's a slog for me nowadays. Same for Braveheart.
Younger me watched Blade Runner and couldn't follow it, but now I love it.
I used to love Apatow comedies, but they're not as funny to me.
Moneyball was ho-hum on my first viewing, but now I love it.
17-year old me loved the Matrix sequels, but now I'm like "wtf were they thinking?"

Bought a Minolta X-700 last Friday on a whim. I was at the film lab dropping some stuff off, and they had it sitting there for $50. The action was smooth, and the light meter appeared fairly on target, so I said "frick it," and grabbed it. First non-Canon camera I've owned.

I can't imagine running Silverstone in the first week of December would be a good idea for anyone. Austin would be very pleasant for Thanksgiving.
That would also be hard for WEC to pull off. They were supposed to go COTA > Fuji > Bahrain. WEC doesn't have the logistics that F1 has, and it'd be hard to pull off a double header at COTA, get to Japan, and then have to race Silverstone in November.

Unless you're really itching to scan them yourself for the experience, at that amount I'd just get someone else to scan them. With 1000 slides, you're sub 50 cents/scan from a professional. You're around the amount that a home scanner and lab scanning are close in price to one another.

How many slides are we talking? Plustek makes decent scanners, but at-home scanning is very time consuming. Doubly so if you get into color editing and whatnot.
I scan all of my own 35mm film, and I've also scanned hundred, maybe thousands of slides at home too. I use my mirrorless camera, macro lens, and special piece of equipment with a built in light. It's a process, and it's luckily one I love doing, but I could see how it would be very annoying for someone not super into photography.
