Being at the game, it did feel a bit off all the way around including the crowd (hot as balls). However, I was a bit surprised to see how much negativity came from this game. It clearly felt like we were working on things.
I thought the defense actually played fairly well until the end. Zayco was a nice surprise and Hilliard got to shake the rust off.

I am concerned with the run game as that will not work against the big games on our schedule, but I think getting white back will remedy things.
I don't see the need for all the doom and gloom, not yet at least.

Back to back cupcake games are a bad idea. Cupcake games are good - just not back to back.

This is what I am thinking as well. I don't understand the negativity. Ball state scored all but three of their points against 3rd and 4th stringers. Nevada played really well and we were sloppy in many ways. Not to mention that we played a ton of guys in this game too.

Any chance y'all were just looking ahead before the brutal part of your schedule starts? I would have ranked y'all as a top 10 team after the first week of the season, and it's relatively normal for teams to sleepwalk through this type of game, especially after Nevada lost last week to Arizona. That being said, Arizona is a pretty good team, and they only beat Nevada by 24. There's a chance Nevada isn't that bad, and y'all should beat Arkansas by 15+ next week. Hopefully for y'all it's just a couple issues y'all will figure out by next Saturday, and I think y'all will be able to do that.

inconsistent play and lousy oline play shouldn't be happening even in a "practice" game.

This board often holds up 2012 as some perfect season but it really wasn't. At this time in 2012, there were countless threads about how Sumlin's CUSA offense will never work in the SEC and that the coaching staff was in over their heads. Quite a bit of that was because of our performance vs SMU and I don't think people remember most of that because of how the season ended.

There's an awful lot of revisionist history where Kingsbury was always hailed as a genius and we were awesome from the jump. We played well against UF and then played like arse in the following 2 OOC games as we worked on things. Then Arkansas came to town and we went off on them.

We didn't score vs SMU til the 6th series and I don't think we had a first down in the first quarter. That was an absolutely loaded offense with an elite OL group and Johnny Manziel behind center. One play I remember in particular Jake Matthews blocked no one and the DE got a free shot on Johnny.

A lot of things need game reps to fix and Sumlin has always used OOC games this way

If the team can't put it together it's time to make some changes. This is just my opinion and I expect to get blown up for it but it's how I feel.

But we just did make changes

Everyone has a right to their opinion and I hope you don't take this as me "blowing you up," just trying to give some context.

There are certainly things we aren't doing well right now. But it's really hard to judge what is what. For instance, I think if we have trouble in pass pro, we will go back to the waggles which clearly worked. If we have trouble with gap control, we can put Zo back in the game (he barely played vs Nevada). Will those sort of fixes work? We really don't know until we play someone capable of punishing us for our mistakes and adjusting to our adjustments.

I just think you are making far too much of what we're doing vs cupcakes especially when history suggests this is entirely normal in Sumlin's era.

I just don't like what I'm seeing, I'm generally pretty much on the pro side of things and not the con side but something just doesn't look or feel right about this team. I hope I'm wrong but only time will tell.

Considering how long Sumlin has been here, it's pretty crazy that I am still completely on the fence about his offense.
