OOC game with Lamar, Rice, SMU or Louisiana-Monroe does not find its way to national TV. OOC game against the 'sips will find its way to national TV, for years to come, regardless of how much the 'sips suck. Sure, that national exposure will arguably help the 'sips, but it helps us, too. Isn't "national TV exposure" the very essence of the "brand" mentality?
We have OOC series set up with Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA and Notre Dame over the next 10 seasons. All of those will be on national television with tons of exposure.
The bigger worry to me would be if UT gets back to being really good in a few years and we have an SECW slate plus OOC games against UT and Oregon. Or if we were to cancel the series against Oregon, UCLA and ND , which would rob our fans of some unique experiences

Ummmm all but the one that hasn't been played yet were on national tv.....but I understand your point the games were nationally broadcast because we were ranked so high. Had we not been in the top 10 probably only Rice makes the cut.
But back to my point, screw the sips, let them rot, don't throw their arrogant, drug infested program a life line under any circumstance.

This ain't a zero sum game. What's best for TAMU could also be a benefit to tu.
I never intimated that it was a zero sum game. In fact, I've explicity stated that the rub is that their benefits will far outstrip ours given the current state of our respective football programs.

I've seen big name programs lose on national tv, and everyone piles on. It only helps them if they win, and I don't see that happening now.
You're viewing this myopically on two fronts:
--if we start up another long-term annual series with them, it allows them to play a pittance of a schedule and validate it with a fluke win or moral victory outing against us, which benefits them far greater than us dealing with the SEC meatgrinder and then having to deal with a t.u. team/fanbase that has had the luxury of amping themselves up for one game. Perception-wise, a win is only marginally beneficial for us, while it would be a boon for them just to stay close, much less win. Sure, they're struggling now, but sports are cyclical, and eventually they could back into winning 2-3 in a row, which would do massive damage to our brand. Not that I'm scared of us playing them, but the potential upsides/downsides to such a series for both schools are far from equitable as things stand.
quote:
I also think you're undervaluing the benefit to our program, which is why we disagree.
I assure you I am not. Again, I'm not saying there would be absolutely no benefit to TAMU, only that ours would be marginal compared to those on tap for t.u., and marginal in comparison to those we're already reaping as members of this perpetually strong athletic conference.

Don't take things too personally. I'm not calling you an idiot, but I will vehemently disagree as a second generation Aggie holding a marketing degree.
I look forward to Beating The Hell Outta t.u. again in the future--if we so happen to meet in the postseason.

Sure, if you consider ESPN13 or SECN7 to be "national television."
I am talking about major network. You know, the type of thing that a causual football fan will watch because it is on his normal channel-surfing trail. Not something you must use the "search" button to find down in the 600-range of the channels.

Well, I am a third generation Aggie with an Accounting degree (summa), a Finance degree (summa) and a Law degree (honors). I win!

Your law degree doesn't count, especially here!

ESPN2
ABC
And SEC network
Are all national networks

Mention of my law degree from Colorado River College made me think of something lighthearted and relevant to this thread.
My class was about 20% 'sips and 8% Aggies.
During my three years in Austin, we beat the 'horns three times ... twice IN Austin. I lived about two blocks off campus, so a lot of us Aggies would gather at my house before and after the games. We'd even invite our 'sip classmates.
How much fun do you think it was showing up for class on the following Monday each of those years?

I'm not taking it personally, but personal attacks ruin a discussion. Two of us disagreed with the majority, and we were subjected to personal attacks. You didn't say that only an idiot or troll would disagree with you, but others itt have.
All of these points are debatable. There are no hard facts. We're all just speculating and making subjective valuations. If we can't have room to disagree in that kind of discussion, then we have a problem.
Btw, you don't have to show me your resume for me to respect your opinion. I do, but I still disagree with it.

This. Playing UT in an OOC game would give them the chance to do what Boise State or TCU did in the Oughts - beat a conference schedule of patsies and then validate themselves by getting sky high for the one game of the year that matters against a team beat up by playing tough competition every week, thereby pulling the upset. They'd then simultaneously legitimize their weak schedule and thwart the assertion that the SEC is a much better conference. For what we'd get out of it, giving them that would not be worth it.

FWIW you've presented your argument in a much more rational and respectful way in my opinion

I was just trying to give you and idea of where I'm coming from (respect for the history of the t.u. game and the marketing consequences of resuming a series)

That is your prerogative. I can agree to disagree. Hoping the powers that be fall on my side of the issue as it stands now, of course

I believe FSU is the better example of this. As in, Texas is trying to FSU their way back to prominence. Meh, they'll do it if their one big game (two really, as long as they play OU) is us or some other P5 opponent.

This is probably the perfect analogy.

Thanks!
Btw, I figured with my habit of going against the flow and sig it was only a matter of time before I was accused of being a troll. I took my internet persona from Poe (and John Wayne) long before #letsride was a thing. I like it, though, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna give it up because some midget spun a catchphrase that sounds similar.
