Preseason expectations vs. reality (1996 - present)

Doing some math using the AP poll (assuming "unranked" has a value of 26), I've come up with these numbers:
Since 1996, we've finished, on average, 2 spots lower than we were ranked in the preseason AP poll.
We have only finished higher than we were ranked in the preseason at the end of the season once (when ranked in the preseason) and that was the 1998 season (started 14th, finished 11th).
We have gone from ranked at the start of the year to unranked at the end of the year six times, (1996, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2014) once when starting in the top ten (2011).
We have gone from unranked at the start of the year to ranked at the end of the year three times (1997, 2010, 2012). In 2012, we went from unranked to top 5.
Only three times have we started and ended the season ranked (1998, 1999, 2013)
The worst seasons we had, based on preseason expectations, were, in this order:
2011: Preseason #8, finished 7-6
1996: Preseason #13, finished 6-6
2005: Preseason #17, finished 5-6
1999: Preseason #7, finished #23 and 8-4
2013: Preseason #7, finished #18 and 9-4

That season really was excruciating. I don't know if there is any comparison to how terrible it was as a fan in all of sports. Sure, there are plently of massive single game choke jobs out there to point to, but we had FIVE games where we weren't just winning, but blowing the other team out at halftime that we ended up losing. Had we held on to our leads, with our preseason record, we'd be looking at a natty. Instead, we were a national laughingstock and had to fire our good-guy coach, which we did in the least professional manner possible, just adding insult to all the injury. AND THAT'S THE YEAR OF THE DROUGHT. Texas was literally on fire while all of this was happening. And then the QB ended up becoming long time starter for the Dolphins and all the linemen play in the NFL so we know for sure that the talent was actually there.
