well the Louisville/Auburn matchup in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game certainly does not help the prospects of opening with a big time opponent. Unless we start on a Thursday, which I doubt they would want for an opening, I don't see the SEC setting up a marque matchup that would trump the made for TV event.

perhaps we will start the year on the road and open Kyle Sept 12?

Nebraska (the 2 teams who shat on the Big 12)
Georgia Tech (for the contrasting offensive styles)
Oregon (for the track meet)
Texas State (frick Fran)
Arizona State (Recruiting success in AZ & the coeds )
Texas (frick the whorns)

as it stands we need 3 OOC games at home to get to 6 home games for 2014. We have three for sure open dates on 9/6, 9/13, and 10/25. A 4th potential open date is on 9/20 if my prediction of us mutually exiting the last SMU game comes true. While 11/22 is technically open I don't think there is a chance in hell we would play a game just 5 days before LSU.

ULM is already set. Lamar is TBA. That leaves one slot open. However, I went back to the notion of TCU on the schedule...

quote:

you hearing something? They certainly have a perfect fit on 9/6...

looking at things, SMU also needs to drop a team for 14 if they want to keep TCU on their schedule. I don't see them dropping Baylor 2 years in a row and they just signed a deal to play North Texas for the next 10+ years. I also doubt we are going to want to play back to back games in Dallas considering the mild attendance issues games at JerryWorld we've had.

Because of that I could see us working out some sort of trade where we mutually agree to cancel with SMU so they can get TCU on their schedule for 9/20. Perhaps they get a game at Kyle in the future but unless we go completely hardline on SMU like we did this year I'll be mildly surprised they stay on the '14 schedule.

Here are the other teams that still need a '14 game. I'm not going to include teams that have TBA games if they add up to the max amount they can play. So schools like Clemson (1 TBA), Duke (2 TBAs), or NC State (3 TBAs) won't be here even though a deal could theoretically be struck with them.

The one exception I will make on that rule is with Purdue b/c it's known that Notre Dame needs to drop a game in 2014 due to their 5 game ACC commitment making that one a prime candidate for a 1 off. Scuttlebutt has ND dropping either Purdue or Rice.

ACC

American

Big 12

Big 10

CUSA

MAC

Mountain West

Pac 12

Sun Belt

So that makes 25 FBS schools who have space on their schedules in 2014 that need to be filled.

Sticking with the Billy Liucci claim of we are going to like the schedule, I am going to go ahead and assume that the MAC teams are out. Of course I'd rather play one of them than Lamar but since there are better options I'll ignore them for now.

The biggest games we could get for a national audience are Stanford and Miami. To make things interesting, both also have open dates in 2015 that could be used to open new Kyle.

Syracuse, Louisville, BC, Purdue, and Wazzou fit the national exposure bill to a much lesser degree. Although I think schools like ECU and SDSU might actually bring a bigger audience (as well as somewhat realistic 2-1 deals due to location) than Wash State so I'm sinking the pirate and his crew as a potential partner.

Syracuse has shown they are willing to do a 1 off with Mizzou and Purdue is in the situation with ND where they may not need a return trip. I think Louisville was probably miffed that we wouldn't work with them this year for a kickoff classic type game so they may not want to work with us. As much as I'd like to beat up on BC I'm guessing we really wouldn't want to give them a return game even if they would be willing to play it in Gillette.

Everyone else would obviously be a one off game. IMO that would most likely mean schools nearby like Rice, North Texas, Arkansas State, and Colorado State due to the lesser travel costs we would be helping them pay.

Anywho, with the guy with a track record of being in the know from the Houston boards claiming we are setting up a deal with Cougar High, I'm going to assume they are one of the 14 games. With Kyle seating a ridiculous 109k next year it actually makes sense to play the Cougs as they have become a much better fanbase that travels somewhat decently as of late.

The trade with TCU for SMU also makes too much sense for it to not happen as it would really help all three schools and foster a positive relationship for future scheduling.

I think having worked with Miami fairly recently and their open date on 9/5 in '15 makes them a more likely big time OCC matchup than Stanford though both would be great. Also, while I am sure Sumlin would like to recruit Cali, Florida makes more sense considering the conference we are in. (I am of course assuming we can stave off USC from hiring him away with the NFL not yet sure if they want more Chip Kelly types)

Reading the tea leaves I'm going to predict this is our OOC for '14 as well as the return games.

09/06 TCU (going to them '16)
09/13 @Miami (w/return trip opening Kyle in '15)
09/20 Houston (us going to Reliant in '17)

and since BL said we'd be really happy with the schedule I refuse to put Lamar in my prediction.

from Jason Cook the other day on TexAgs Radio

quote:

"We're talking with one program right now that everyone is familiar with. Hopefully we can go public with that soon."

LINK

If by "familiar with" he means we have played this school in the last 20 (+1) years there are 10 schools who still need a game that would qualify. (year last played in parenthesis)

Stanford (1992)
Louisville (1994)
Houston (1995)
North Texas (1998)
Southern Miss (1999)
TCU (2001)
Arkansas State (2008)
Miami (2008)
Utah State (2009)
Rice (2013)

my bet is still on TCU and Houston if we mutually cancel with SMU (I still think this is almost a given) and Miami if we dump Lamar (which probably won't happen )

I assume from that statement he's talking about Va Tech.

Here is the full question and response from Gabe and Jason. (starts at 34:46)

Gabe - "When will the 2014 schedule officially be completed and released publicly and have there been any efforts to schedule BCS conference caliber opponents in 2014?

Jason - "You know we're still behind the gun on the schedule standpoint Gabe. In the conference transition, you know, this is one of those things we're still being hurt a couple years down the road because in the Big 12 we had a 9 game conference schedule and then going to an 8 game conference schedule and then we had the double whammy that one of our non conference games was Arkansas which became a conference game. So it's going to take a couple years for us to get that cleaned up. But we're talking with one program right now which would be a name program which would be someone who everyone is familiar with and hopefully we can get to where we can make that announcement soon. But we've got some holes that we're trying to fill. It's difficult."

Va Tech already has a full docket next season and would have to cancel a game to put us on their schedule. Everything I have read on their boards indicates that series won't start until 2015 or 2016.

Of course JC could have just been speaking in general terms for future schedules b/c he technically did not specify what year he was talking about even though Gabe was directly asking about next year.

yeah, see what you're saying. I just read the quote and there is no context to year so assumed he meant Va Tech.

As to the more detail, a large number of schools you listed are not "name programs"

Houston (1995)
North Texas (1998)
Southern Miss (1999)
Arkansas State (2008)
Utah State (2009)
Rice (2013)

I think only these could qualify in that regard and TCU and Louisville may be a stretch.

Stanford (1992)
Louisville (1994)
TCU (2001)
Miami (2008)

ehh, I could see him counting Houston as a name program b/c (a) everyone knows who they are at A&M and (b) they are technically a BCS school.

Again, I am mostly basing the Houston guess off the poster on the Houston site who seems to have correctly predicted Coog High match ups before. Of course, he also now says they are talking to Louisville so perhaps the discussions he seemed know about never bore any fruit.

I don't think TCU and Louisville would be a stretch at all. Both are now P5 members and have been to BCS bowls in the last 10 years.

oh and by the way I met a girl who went to A&M in her 30s SMOKING HOT... I officially move A&M girls way up the list with just that meeting...

Really looking forward to playing y'all. I have an old boss that I still keep in contact with that went to UGA and we already decided whoever is hosting the game is taking the other. He's invited me a few times but I've never been able to make it to a game in Athens so I really hope we play there.

I've got no particular animosity towards TCU, and they're a solid program these days. Any chance they'd agree to a home-and-home starting in Kyle?

I think they would and it's been talked about in this thread or the other one (not sure) but one of the biggest problems with playing them is that we're stuck in Jerryworld which means when we play at TCU we'd be in DFW twice in a year.

It's not horrible and we've done it before, but it's not ideal. When we committed to the Jerryworld thing I think we really removed a great deal of the allure of series with SMU and TCU. But if we are able to get out of this SMU game I think it has a bit more appeal.

I agree, but beggars can't be choosers when it comes to getting a quality opponent one year in advance.

Miami would definitely be the ideal opponent in terms of both quality and recruiting but I doubt they want both us and Nebraska on the schedule. I'd also support Wazzu just because the game would be fun as hell.

looks like Arizona State in Houston in 2015. Weird. I'd think we'd try to open at home

geez, I'm slacking on this thread from being sick.

I can't believe I missed that A&M may play Arizona State.

I was just coming in to say Texas Tech is out until at least 2016. Of note, the link has how much Tech is paying it's FCS teams.

LINK

I wonder if they are wanting to open at Kyle a little later b/c they want to give some breathing room in case of delays.

I'm also guessing that means the other three OOC games in '15 will be home games.

so after a little poking around I found Lamar's potential schedule.

looks like they are going to have space for us no matter where we add OOC teams so we may as well assume they are going to be one of the home games.

apparently the likely date is 9/6.

quote:

8/30 vs GRAMBLING
9/6 @ Texas A&M
9/13 TBD or BYE
9/20 TBD or BYE
9/27 ??
10/4 @ Abilene Christian
10/11 ??
10/18 ??
10/25 ??
11/1 vs HBU
11/8 @ Central Arkansas
11/15 ??

I understand that we committed to the Lamar game way back as a payday for them as they try to resurrect their football program.

You can't help but wonder if there is some sort of "unspoken" deal with tu to announce a renewal once Dodds is gone. I know a lot of folks are ready to say, "frick tu" but it has been the official stance of TAMU all along to renew the rivalry "any time, anywhere" all along.

I have little to no interest in playing Tech. I am only slightly lukewarm on playing TCU. The only XII schools that I would like to see us get a home/home with are OU and KSU.

If we get ASU game at Reliant that is cool. In 2015 we are the visiting team in Arlington so it doesn't affect us that year. I would love a home/home with Virginia Tech. Nebraska would be cool as well. Hopefully the Michigan deal will come to fruition to help open the new Kyle.

At the end of the day, the SEC will go to 9 games and that will help us alleviate the Arkansas situation.

well it looks like my TCU guess is wrong. Big 12 schedules for 2014 were released yesterday and TCU/SMU will be September 27.

Brent Z. says the Chronicle is reporting a home and home with Rice: College Station in 2014 and at Reliant in 2019.
