It's WAAAAAY harder to make your dollars stretch in Austin. I pay $10K/year in property taxes for crying out loud!
When I was at the Auburn game this year my brother and I stopped and got bloodies on NG. Went to pay and the guy says "$4".
I said "Wow, that's cheap, but we had two so here's a $10 and keep the change."
The guy looks at me and says "No - $2 each, $4 for two".
BLEW. MY. MIND.

Also, someone told me, or I read, that by 2050 CS is projected to have around 500k people?!?!? Is this true? I remember hearing a while back that a&m won a big govt. contract that would bring a lot of people to town. So it sounds like the bcs area is going to have their own little growth spurt.
First of all, you live in SF? Kudos to you. Wife and I made a trip there this Nov. and LOVED IT. I have a buddy who lives there so I know the cost of living is even more insane than NYC, but if you can swing it, man, what a great city.
My folks live out in the country about half an hour from CS and mom, who is retired, volunteers in CS a couple times a week. So I hear a lot of the scuttlebutt about CS.
Appearently, CS is basically becoming an exurb of Houston. People who can afford it are retiring there in droves to escape the ever-creep of Houston's suburban ghetto. It's also possible for a lot of Aggie grads to move there while still young because of the rise of telecommuting and working from home.
The new federal vaccine center is supposed to spawn a bunch of related private industry & labs that will further boost the population. That's the big gov't contract you heard about.
CS has highrise condo buildings with ground-floor retail now. It's crazy.

Even funnier that they suggested to try Houston instead
