Another note while we're on the topic of the o-line is how differently Richmond is viewed under Wells than Mahoney. Mahoney was done with him by mid season last year and Wells took him under his wing and was really responsible for the huge jump he took from App State/Va Tech to Nebraska.

If Mahoney had been retained I think Richmond would be elsewhere.

How do I pose this question delicately... So Mahoney maybe thought Richmond was maybe a bit dull but Wells thinks he's more than teachable if you know how?

I think if Tatum continues to impress you will see he and Richmond at tackle with Kendrick and Smith at guard and Robertson at center.

I believe that would be their ideal 5.

The mental aspect is something that you have to remember in terms of positioning guys. Putting Richmond and Boulware next to each other is probably not an option for that reason.

Robertson and Kendrick are the guys who can help other guys the most. Tatum probably 3rd.

Smith is very bright but green.

Jones and Thomas have experience but I think they want Robertson/Kendrick next to Richmond/Smith if possible.

That would be my ideal lineup given the restraints and that unfortunately leaves Jack out unless they rotate OL which they've talked about doing. He may hate the idea but an RS isn't a bad idea for him. With the way things are setting up his spot really opens his senior year and that sucks considering he's been the extra man each year.

Thomas isn't strong enough to play inside, imo. That was his biggest problem at center. Experience or no I think he's depth from this point on barring injury.

Wow, this is really impressive by Tatum to be making a push to start at 280lbs. He still weighs about that right? I though he was going to redshirt.

Also promising that Wells is responsible for helping Richmond improve over the season. He didn't look like an SEC player to start the season, but wasnt half bad against Nebraska. How the hell go you just give up on a 5 star tackle at the start of his 2nd season?

Some of tonight's practice notes from Jesse Simonton at VQ:

Shy Tuttle was running well the DL as they worked on sideline calls and communication. The idea of the drill was to look to Hoke for the call, run the play and then spring 5-10 yards up the field and do it again.
Meanwhile, Hoke said after practice that Tennessee would do extensive film study on Georgia Tech tomorrow and then hold two days of defensive practice (Tuesday and Wednesday) on the Yellow Jackets. Hoke also said he hopes to have a 10-man rotation along the DL.
Walt Wells also spoke with the media after practice, and Tennessee's OL coach admitted the unit is shorthanded right now but is confident they'll be back full strength here soon. Most interestingly, he's not in a rush to name a starting five. Hopes to lockdown that group around the start of game week.

Heard Tatum might have turf toe. That is usually a nagging injury. I don't exactly feel good about our oline's health right now.

Yeah, it's been a tough fall camp on the OL. I think a decent chunk of our guys are nursing minor issues, but should be back by Georgia Tech. Sucks to lose some of the practice time and continuity for the starters.

On a positive note it sounds like the defense and Ty Chandler have been impressive recently

Heard Tuttle, J Kelly and Chandler had great weeks.

Terrible week for the receivers.

Glad to hear that on Tuttle.

Personal thoughts on the score against Georgia Tech?

Why does our offensive line, which finally has a shot to be halfway decent, have to be falling apart?

I just want to get through the season with all of our defensive tackles. everyone talks about how we couldn't stop the run last season, but it was because we literally had no healthy defensive tackles left to play

Some info From EliVol (Very well respected poster on VQ who has connections within the program):

quote:

nothing earth shattering but thought I would share. This is from one of the coaches.

It's great that they have a lot of time to prepare for Ga Tech but it is taking away valuable time for preparing for the rest of the offenses. They will be prepared and ready for the option.

2018 class is full. They may have to cut one to two guys but they are looking at 2018 class as already full. They are very confident with the players left on their board in 2018. Right now the emphasis is on the 2019 class.

Tye Chandler will go down as one of the best RB's to ever come through TN. He is the real deal. Comes from a great family and he just gets it. Does everything right on and off the field. He will be huge this year and going forward.

That's all I got. Flame away.

Doug Mathews has unreal hype for Chandler. Saying essentially his skill level is every bit as good as Lewis, Webb, and Garner.

B. Hubbs was on the radio in Nashville and said that Chandler is the #2 behind Kelly and has impressed everyone that's seen him play. I'm excited to see what he can do in Atlanta

I mean I'm excited about his potential but those are some insane expectations to put on him this early.

I can't argue against that. I love to hear what Mathews has to say and I have fallen into the offseason hype again. I might have a learning disability

I need Chandler to start going by his entire first name before he hits it big time.

These RBs are the real deal.

VOLS are in great position there for a while.

I would take Kelly/Chandler over AK/Hurd
