If you followed the 247 situation a lot of the fallout was Brice calling out the hit piece Haney wrote. The owner had eventually backed away from that story and then backed away more. In the meantime, Haney wrote another story that cited an unnamed assistant coach for another team (IOW, an anonymous source from a rival school) who claimed that Butch would've been fired if not for the AD search which is pretty much him simply writing up a negative recruiting pitch and calling it news.

As the result of that article the owner of 247 (BAMA fan IIRC) has been forced to take even more drastic action to preserve 247's reputation.

Per Callahan:

"We've been in contact with the folks at 247Sports headquarters today, and we've been assured by our CEO, Shannon Terry, that Travis Haney won't be writing about Tennessee again for us.

We'll have more on this later. Working on it as we speak."

And Rucker posted this on their website last night:

Rather than post in every single thread, I'm going to write this in a new thread so everyone can read it.

I'm going to be as transparent as I can be about this: We are 100 percent aware of the fallout from that 247Sports story on the SEC East today, and we are not happy. And we are working on a solution.

There is no right answer here, in my opinion, but I assure you we are angrier than you could possibly imagine. This hit the GoVols247 staff out of absolutely nowhere.

Again, I'm being 100 percent honest here: I did not know this story had been written — much less published — until some people at Tennessee contacted me and were furious. I also did not know about the story in December until just before it was published, and I was not given a chance to read it until it was published on the site.

No one on the GoVols247 staff knew anything about today's until it was on the 247Sports site.

I can't sit here and tell you how exactly this is going to be fixed, but it's going to be fixed.

Aside from my family, there is nothing more important to me than the integrity of the reporting on this site. That is not corporate speak, either. That is real.

All I can do right here and now is beg you to let us continue huddling together as a staff until we find the best way to fix this. But it will be fixed. And soon.

------------------------------

Sounds like the situation has become untenable there with Haney.

And Callahan's post (response to a poster):

You must've missed my post earlier saying that Travis Haney will not be writing about Tennessee for us again and saying that we have been in contact with the folks at 247Sports headquarters about the story today. None of us are happy about it.

John and I both asked our bosses to delay the story, and they thankfully were willing to do that. I don't think they were targeting the date of Trey Smith's announcement. That's just when the story was ready to go, so I think you're implying an agenda in that date that wasn't there.

All of that said, we're all pretty pissed about how this has gone down today, and we will have a more thorough response pretty soon.
--------------------

Is it safe to say 247 is dumpster fire right now? Sounds like every UT reporter they have is ready to riot over the mess Haney has been allowed to make.

F uck Travis Haney. That dude has cost 247 all of their sources in Knoxville and quite honestly needs his arse beat for the total smear campaign that he's put on show the last 3-4 months.

I'm glad Brice told Haney to go frick himself and bailed on 247.

That board is such a mess right now. I've never seen so many people cancel their subscriptions and openly petition to have somebody fired like what has transpired the last few days.

I agree. 247 was on top of things with great sources but the stunts Haney has pulled has cost them subs and us valuable info. Honestly, I think the reason that none of the pay sites knew shite about the AD thing was due to Haney burning bridges and making sources who'd normally supply info. wary of talking to the press. No one wants to be a part of a hit job without their knowledge.

It's sad tho. Of the 3 major sites 247 was the best at Vols coverage. It will take them a long time to repair things and if the owner only reassigns Haney instead of outright firing him then it will take forever.

I am dumb and confused. So Haney was basically writing hit pieces with no substantial evidence? Should we kill him?

With "anon" sources. I went straight redneck and blasted that dumb f uck on Twitter. Dude completely tried to sabotage the recruitment of Trey Smith with his first article.

It is sad. 247 did a good job with bringing new information and Haney just completely sabotaged those years of trust that Ryan, Wes and Grant built with the staff. It's all gone in a matter of months. Haney just made those guys livelihood a lot harder. I'm petty af, but if I was one of them I'd be throwing hands with that pos. I half way wonder what I would do if I saw him out in the city. At the very least he'd be getting some degrading adjectives thrown his way. Excuse my inner white trash.

If this year's drama manifests itself as this then I'll take it.

Travis Haney is a typical product of the Twitter era of bloggers and thousands of writers who think they are Woodward and Bernstein and hold themselves in high esteem.

He sucks. Rucker and Callahan are very good, and they handled this as professionally as possible, but they've clearly reached the breaking point.

And Lucky is a Frickin 13 year old child.

Damn. And I don't keep up with the beat writers very closely, but iirc Brice was generally liked by most and did well covering VOLS.

Real drunk John brice has always been solid imo and I have enjoyed reading his stuff.

What if Brent Hubbs is the mastermind behind all of this in an effort to tarnish GoVOLS247? Sounds outlandish but VQ had been getting their asses kicked by Callahan/247, and now they are without their two best writers imo, Brice and Fortenberry.

Do not let the goofy face and worn out Asics fool you, Hubbs is cutthroat af and would rent his mother out for a $9.95 subscription

Agreed. He is awful at his job and even worse on twitter. I hate how he has to find a way to interject his stroke into any and every story.

Callahan is outstanding with recruiting and I had hoped when Brice went to 247, they would be sending Rucker out to the pasture.

Rucker often acts like a child on twitter. He argues way too much with fans. If he ever grows up, he might just make for a good beat writer. Some of his stuff is good but an equal amount can be anywhere from meh to wtf in terms of quality.

Fortenberry, Callahan and Brice were great but now Callahan is the only solid one left at 247. PFort was my personal fave over there when it came to recruiting news.
