just curious but who do some of my fellow Vol fans want to see as the next basketball coach. If we go the mid-major route I would like to see Will Wade or Mike White. If not Rick Barnes would be a great hire I am just concerned about his drive to recruit after losing a job he loved. Obviously guys like Miller, Smart, or Marshall would be awesome but I don't see that happening. Like i said just curious.

Oh shite, looks like it's really going to be Barnes.

Don't want to get too far ahead of things here, but there is strong mutual interest between Rick Barnes and Tennessee. Much more aggressive interest on Tennessee's side of things than I knew of at this time yesterday.
Coaching searches are always fluid, but I have been led to believe he is the guy if everything works out as they hope it will (not saying there have been any snags, but I think there will be due diligence done on both sides especially after the Tyndall deal).
If things go smoothly, I think you could be looking at this getting done much earlier than the 10-14 day window I originally expected.

I think Wade is going to be a very good coach but idk if Hart is in a position to roll the dice on a guy like that after Tyndall blew up in his face.

Wade will only get the job if we miss on some bigger fish. Plus Wade doesn't have any baggage that is apparent. Mack at Xavier would be a good pickup but he is a Xavier alum and don't think he would leave unless we payed big bucks.

Tommy said the other day that not many know this but Mack was offered the job last year before Tyndall and he turned it down.

Which is why I don't think we will get him if we offered. It sounds like Barnes. Like I said though my concern is his drive to start over at a new program when he never wanted to leave Texas. I know if I was in that position I might struggle to start all over. Hopefully he turns out really well.

Yeah hopefully he comes in with a chip on his shoulder and re-energized on the recruiting trail.
Obviously he's not the long term answer but he could up the talent level and stabilize the basketball program quite a bit imo.

With the coaching pool fairly limited on proven HC's currently, I think Barnes would be a good pick up.
Nobody on the market has close to the resume he's built over the years. If Hart went out and made the hire I'd actually be mildly impressed with bottom of the barrel Dave.

Is there anyone Dave Hart hasn't managed to piss off?

They're few and far between at the moment It sounds like there might be quite a bit of pressure on him to get it right this time. Let's hope so. You get what you pay for, Dave.

I mean hellz bellz he even pissed off the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. I don't know of anyone who has managed to do that. I'm half-waiting for Coach Jones to give Hart the ole "he has my full confidence" speech.

To summarize most of what VQ said, Bryce Drew, R. Pitino, R. Barnes, and up to more 1 more person have been reached out to so far. The major person helping the VOLS conduct the search is a retired UT AD.
Bryce Drew's name also being mentioned with the DePaul job.
Pitino is being mentioned with UT and Bama. (Meh)
Rick Barnes - Wants to get back into coaching and there has been mutual interest between both parties so far. His name has also been thrown around with Bama but VQ thinks he would take UT over Bama.
Check out this paragraph on possible upcoming contract details

The final rumbling on Sunday is that whoever the Vols land it's likely to require a deal with a bigger salary and a bigger buyout than the $3 million Tennessee had in Tyndall's contract. In other words to stabilize the program, whoever the Vols hire is looking for more stability for himself.

So the retired AD almost has to be Dickey right? I mean it could be Hamilton I guess (trembling with fear) but I wouldn't think that's likely

That makes the most sense but I'm not sure

Baketball makes a pile of money at UT and doesn't cost much. Dime Store Dave fricked up with Tyndall so he may well be ready to pay. As for the buyout... larger ones also protect us from him bailing but most importantly, this roster is so fubared he needs one and TBH, the short term game Dave's played with no-name hires would be absurd here.
Time for Dave to pay and under the circumstances he likely knows it. There's no way we've been talking to Barnes for this long otherwise. Not like this guy will come cheap.

I read somewhere $2.3 million a year.

that seems about right considering he will also be getting money from Texas for awhile.
