Some interesting info on SEC recruiting budgets/expenditures over the past 5 years. Some is what you might expect but there are a few surprises too.

-------------
SEC schools' annual football recruiting expenses, 2008-13*

1. Tennessee, $1,297,109
2. Auburn, $950,316
3. Alabama, $903,217

4. Arkansas, $652,459
5. Georgia, $626,139
6. Florida, $557,360

7. Mississippi, $438,486
8. LSU, $428,305
9. Missouri,** $424,944

10. Kentucky, $380,210
11. Mississippi State, $352,047

12. Texas A&M,** $287,111
13. South Carolina, $263,094

*Vanderbilt is exempt from disclosure because it is a private university.

**Missouri and Texas A&M did not join the SEC until 2012; spending reflects all five years.
---------

The Vols being 1st in recruiting spending isn't much of a surprise. We outspend everyone in the country and have for ages (according to the report we outspend other schools by an average 0f 36 percent) and we are the only school in the country that averaged a 7 figure expenditure over that time frame -- we do love 'crootin.

Now what DOES surprise me is how much Auburn and Alabama spend, especially Bama. It would also be interesting to see how much spending has changed for TAMU and Mizzou.

It is about time our recruiting expenses reflect a better football record, I think they will this year!

I'm a little surprised that Auburn spends more than Bama. It seems that Auburn recruits more in the Mississippi/Alabama/Georgia/Florida area where Alabama has a broader recruiting base.

Right now, Auburn's class is from Florida/Georgia/Alabama/Mississippi.

Alabama's class is from California, Alabama, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, Kentucky, Washington DC, Missouri, and Tennessee.

I have no reason to believe this is inaccurate, but link, please?

No worries. It's a legit request and I was being a bit lazy by not including it.

I can't find the original USA Today data collection all of this is all based on but it looks like a lot of different 'home town' papers ran their own version based on the data compiled by USA Today so it looks like they sent the raw data out to local papers - I've seen South Carolina versions and Tennessee versions among others all offering their take (we need to spend more or we need to spend less kinda thing).

Here's the Tennessean's take which includes the raw data (ignore the jibes/slant buried within the article - they love being snide to us, gets us to hate-read/hate-click. The raw data is in there. ):

Auburn is having to work harder for recruits right now so lots of visits spread around.

With Saban in place, Bama doesn't have to spend much on recruiting. When he retires, Bama's budget will float up a bit more.

A&M will never have to have a huge budget for recruiting being in Texas. Just like Austin, they have a huge pool to pull from without spending a lot. This goes for UGA, UF and LSU too.

Mizzou has nothing around them so they will have to spend good money to keep up in the SEC, expect to see their budget keep floating up.

Tennessee is doing everything they can with Butch in place to woo recruits and that is reflected in their spending. Lots of glamour and glimmer in their recruiting right now.

The biggest shock to me is that Ole Miss isn't closer to the top three than they are. Looks like they aren't casting as wide a net and really focusing on several players and pressing them hard each year.

Well this is based on a five year average and Auburn had one year where they actually outspent us. It was the only year we finished second. But for the "2012-13 school year....Auburn spent $1,384,188 on football recruiting, outspending Tennessee by $91,644." That HAD to up their average in the five year time frame.

I'm probably missing a school but out of all the SEC schools, Alabama and Tennessee look to have the largest geographic recruiting areas, consistently pulling recruits from all over the country. Others appear to be more regional with the recruits they bring in. But I could be off on that.
