New 2.3 GPA requirement will force redshirts for academic reasons

Every fall there are plenty of incoming freshmen who sit out a season with a redshirt for any number of reasons. Some sit out to get a year of growth in them before being ready to take the field. Others are labeled with a redshirt because the depth at a position is so deep. Now the NCAA looks to force players to take a redshirt if their grades are not up to par.

Beginning in 2016, incoming freshmen will be required to sit out the season with an academic redshirt if they come to school with below a 2.3 GPA out of high school.

As reported by Coaching Search, “the NCAA sliding scale is still in effect, though any player below the 2.3 GPA in their 16 core courses will not be able to participate in games during the first calendar year at college.”

Sabear wants to be able to RS them and blame it on the system. Thus no more Kamara's...

He can say, "It's the rule son, you made the decision for me."

Why are the first two posts on here from non Bama fans flames about Bama? I remember when the recruiting board was for discussion. Good times.

Agreed. Bama is the only school that redshirts kids against their will. Every other school has freshmen who voluntarily sit on the bench. Bammer lies to the recruits and their families. Deceitful Bammers will get theirs one day.

Waaay past due. It'll force some athletes to get serious in high school rather than waiting to their senior year to try to make the cut on the sliding scale.

I like this fine. I really think that they should raise the requirements to get in to get it closer to that of the average student or even the lowest enrolled student outside of athletes.
