If Smith signs with Alabama and Harris signs with LSU then LSU will sign 3 of the top 10 kids from Louisiana (per 247 composite).

The previous 10 years LSU has signed
2017 : 3 of 10 (2 of top 5) (assuming Smith to Bama, Harris to LSU)
2016 : 9 of 10 (4 of top 5)
2015 : 7 of 10 (3 of top 5)
2014 : 5 of 10 (2 of top 5)
2013 : 7 of 10 (4 of top 5)
2012 : 6 of 10 (2 of top 5)
2011 : 7 of 10 (4 of top 5)
2010 : 7 of 10 (4 of top 5)
2009 : 6 of 10 (4 of top 5)
2008 : 7 of 10 (4 of top 5)

Is the 2017 class light for LSU because of the coaching turnover? Signing more kids from other places (as LSU's overall class is still very good)? Specific, one time type kids who decided to do something different or had ties elsewhere? Less overall talent in state this year so the bottom part of the Top 10 wasn't heavily recruited by LSU?

It's just interesting to see so many kids go elsewhere this year, yet still see LSU with a very good class (probably top 5 nationally). Curious what the story is overall (or if it's just a random thing).

Pretty much everything you said is correct.

Just kind of a perfect storm I guess.

When you can sign five Top 100 players from Tennessee, Texas and Florida it doesn't really sting all that much.

It was a down year talent wise in state. If you lose a kid in state you have to be able to replace them out of state we have done a good job or that

I would also like to add a different take... living in Louisiana exposes these kids to the propaganda when LSU is thriving and winning. They are also exposed to the malcontent and catastrophe syndrome when LSU is down. The last 5 years or so, LSU has been "down", and you couldn't turn on sports talk or sit down over dinner without people discussing LSU's troubles.

This influences in-state kids way more than out of state kids, who basically hear about LSU from a national perspective, which has been a lot less gloomy than on a local level. Combine that with Saban's intimate knowledge of the state, and Alabama being the power in college football, and it's why you see what is happening this year.

Interesting take....have to agree that the issues at LSU this year had a lot to do with Bama's haul. There had to be an impact. Whatever else you might want to say about CLM, he did a good job of keeping talent in state.

Mathis said that the moment Miles was gone was when he knew he wouldn't be in Baton Rouge.

quote:

LSU was presumed to be the Tide’s stiffest competition to sign Mathis. The four-star defensive tackle pointed to a moment that he knew he probably wouldn’t end up in Baton Rouge.

“(When) They lost Coach Miles,’ he said. “You know, they’ve got a lot of things going on over there. First off, they’ve got Coach Pete Jenkins over there. He’s the DL coach. I never got to talk to him much. Me and Coach (Karl) Dunbar, we’ve got a great relationship. That’s what I love, a coach that can be there for me. He’s been in an NFL program. I know that I’m going to have a good career over there.”

Alabama has been LSUs the major problem for too Louisiana recruits. Bc 17 year old recruits will barely remember a time when LSU was elite, but Bama has been elite as long as they can remember.

Which is even more impressive when you consider our Offense. I sincerely believe O has hired two top-notch coordinators and it'll pay huge dividends, moving forward.

Especially on the offensive side.
